Another ally and advocate here! I'm looking forward to seeing you post more!

My best friend in college was a drag queen and ohmygosh he was a better looking girl than me. We are still close friends. I'm still jealous of his looks. Some of my favorite memories are of us and his friends, who became mine too.

@lilyofthewest: thank you for starting this thread!

I consider myself an ally! And I try to be mindful of using SO instead of DH in thread titles. ... at least I used to. Not sure about my most recent threads, but I will stop using DH when asking questions to be more inclusive. Thanks for pointing that out!

Woohoo! I'm an ally and an advocate, and thrilled to see this post! I can't stand DH/DS/DD - it seems so cheesy and, honestly, disingenuous. I refer to my spouse as "hubs" because, well, I call him that for real. And my son is just D, cuz it's his initial! Would love to see more inclusive language on the boards!

Welcome! I don't have any friends or family members who are in the gay community but, after hanging out with gay friends of friends when I lived in DC, I had my eyes opened to a whole different world. I was pretty naive and sheltered before I went away to college. My first experience with a gay person wasn't until college.

I never used "DH" just because I thought the name behind it was stupid. I do talk about my husband (as, when we got married, we pledged to call each other husband and wife) but that is us. I try, when asking questions of others, to use significant other. I wish the term DH would die a quick death. :)

Great thread! I have a lot of gay men in my family and friend group. Nice to see some representation of non-hetero relationships! One of my oldest gay friends just married the man of his dreams! If I notice they talk about bebe's I'll see if he'll join. ;)

I love that families have changed in so many incredible ways compared the narrow view we had when I was growing up. Welcome and thanks for adding to the community.

I think Ellen Degeneres said it best,, from a letter she posted on her blog:

"We're just trying to find happiness in the bodies and minds we were given, like everyone else."

@nana87: that's pretty impressive and sounds like a wonderful place to grow up. I have several LGBTQ (did I get that right?) friends from high school who moved out of state before coming out. They all seem to have wonderful happy lives now (in places like D.C. , Vermont, and California) but I feel sad that they couldn't be themselves at a younger age, or at "home"

I love this thread!

I grew up in a very socially liberal town, with lots of friends coming out as early as middle school, so it always just boggles my mind that there's so much hatred out there--it just makes zero sense to me.

I'm a big homo over here. I'll agree with the previous suggestions of using more inclusive language being one thing to improve HB LGBT relations. What that doesn't mean to me though is changing what you call your own special person. If you're a straight (or queer) woman married to a man you don't need to call your Darling Husband your partner to make me feel better, it doesn't. (Sometimes it can have the opposite effect) You can however when asking a question to a group consider that other people may have partners of other genders and use inclusive language when applicable.

@lilyofthewest: You and I have a similar story. I had a civil union with my high school sweetheart, the year it became legal in Vermont and we stayed married for 8 years. I actually never thought I would remarry, forget a man, but I did and am now happy as ever.

A lot of my friends are LGBTQ community and even when I recommend the site, they are all surprised that I participate. It was another reason why I started my post
