I just checked some quotes I was sent a few months ago, and they ranged from $38 - 47/month for a $500K, 30yr policy. I haven't pulled the trigger yet... I have high cholesterol, so I'm worried that will change the rate significantly. I know they all require some sort of physical exam. Anyone have any experience with that??

that amount sounds about right, if not just a few dollars higher for your ages. 30 yr term, at 39, for $500K we were being quoted for $40 / month. we just finished our medical exams, and are good to go; definitely peace of mind knowing we got this taken care of. we didn't get any insurance for the LO.

We went through select quote and they helped us find the cheapest, it was much cheaper NOT to get it through our auto insurance company.

DH has a $500K policy for around $750 per year, and my policy is $250K for $17/month

Ours is 20 or 25 year term life. About $455/year for me and $800 for my husband, (BMI shooting this up - if he loses weight we can apply for a reduction.) I think $750k coverage on both? Through cincinnati life.

@Goldilocks1107: I think that's what that policy is - a Universal Life insurance for LO. It sounds like a good idea to me. I'd never even heard of it until the guy gave us the quote for it!

@MamaMoose: We plan to do a 529, but since that is just for education, we thought this sounded like a good option, too, in case something were to happen and he would need health care or something like that. I think that's more what this is for. I guess I have to look into it a bit more to really clarify that. Thanks for bringing it up, though, cuz I hadn't really thought about it!

We have mortgage insurance instead which would pay off our home if something happened to one of us. SO its about $300k coverage and costs total $19 biweekly. We need to switch to life insurance though.

I think those rates are reasonable considering your age. Life insurance gets higher as you're older. We pay something very similar and are insured for the same amount. As long as you go with a reputable company I think you'll be fine.

@Aprilk The idea of getting a higher life insurance policy on your child for that reason actually makes a lot of sense to me, I had never really thought about it like that before. I made my husband increase his life insurance to a point where I could pay off the house/car/student loans plus cover cost of living for a few years so I wouldn't need to work for that very reason. I will keep that in mind when we have a little one, especially since it isn't super expensive at that point.

I want to say our life insurance is in the same ball park but I really can't remember. Ours is through my husband's work, which is a fairly large corporation but I still remember feeling like it wasn't cheap.

@MamaMoose: It's Erie insurance.

I do have a policy through work that is only about $10/month, taken right out of my paycheck, but it only covers about $100K, which wouldn't go far if something were to happen to me. We opted for $500K because we live in an expensive area, so our mortgage is high, child care is high... $1M is probably unnecessary, but we thought we'd get quotes on it anyway.

We applied for a 20-year $250K term policy for each of us. The estimated premium is going to be $16/mth for me, and $18/mth for DH. We went with the 20-year policy because our house will be close to paid off by then, and our LO will be in college, so we won't need as much life insurance to pay debts/living expenses.

We're also getting our LO a Universal Life policy with guaranteed increase options, so she can get additional coverage later in life, even if she becomes "uninsurable".

Definitely ask around for quotes - we've had quite a range in what is offered by different companies.

We, fortunately, get ours for free through the military. We have $400k on DH and $200k on me. We also have $10k on C. I'm not sure if we get to keep it once he separates, but after that we'll probably do it through USAA.

Maybe age plays a factor in your higher premiums? I have $250k and I'm 26 so my monthly premium is $26/month. After I hit a certain age, my cost goes up a little each time.

We have a 30 year term for 500K each, and mine is $34 a month and Hubs is $76 a month. His is way expensive b.c he is football player wide and his BMI is just ridiculous. Of course, he's not the slimmest either but looking at him you would never think he's "obsese" as the BMI scale indicates.

We have ours through USAA and we also looked at State Farm. SF was about twice the price - very expensive. USAA is notoriously low-cost on these things since they are a credit union for military (we are grandfathered in via my Hubs Dad, who served). So I would say those numbers are actually quite reasonable.

For my son, we pay like 1.00 a month for 10K of coverage through work. Not a whole lot, but enough to cover any services if something were to happen to him. Maybe we should get more on him since I know I wouldn't be able to work for a long time if anything were to happen to him!!!

Do you mind saying the company you are using? As long as it's a large financially sound institution I actually think those are pretty decent rates. Personally I would probably skip doing the plan for the baby. I'm assuming the baby's policy would be whole life rather than term life. Those are more like investment products and in my opinion definitely not the best option for saving for baby. You'd be better off setting up a 529 or an UTMA/UGMA account and contributing to it monthly.

Here is a link to AGLA's (American General Life and Accident) online quote system. You don't have to put any personal information, just the state you live in, your age, consumer choice term (the type of policy) the amount of term life and the term (depending on the age of your children, you would probably want between 18-20 years) and how you would pay (monthly ABC is automatic bank draft).

I don't work for AGLA, but I do have insurance through them and found their prices to be very competitive.

It will at least give you another point of reference

That does seem high, but $500K/$1M is a lot of money! I pay about $8/month, but I think mine is only for $150K. I am also 26, so that may make the premiums lower. Mine is a term life insurance, but it doesn't actually ever expire. I do think the percentage recoverable goes down after a certain age (70, I think).

Hubs and I FINALLY contacted our insurance company to get some quotes for life insurance. We are looking at 30-year term life. We got quotes for both $500K and $1M. We are 33 and 35, both healthy, nonsmokers. The quote for me for $500K was $43/month, for $1M was $80/month. For Hubs for $500K was $45/month, for $1M was $83/month. Is that pretty normal or comparable to what others are paying? It sounds high to me.

We were also quoted a 20-year life policy for the baby for $25K. We would pay into it for 20 years, but it would last for the rest of his life, and he could roll it over into a different policy when needed. That quote is $19/month.

We went with our insurance first, so we could get a "discount" by having our home, auto, and life with one company. But those quotes seem high to me, so I'm thinking maybe we should shop around. Do you have life insurance? What is your monthly premium? And did you get a policy for your baby?
