We used an agent from Principal to bid around for a 30 year term and we have him re-bid every year. DH's policy is with Genworth currently. It's pretty massive since he is the primary breadwinner. It would be enough to pay off the mortgage, college for our kids, and would support me for many, many years, since I only work part time, our health benefits are through my employer, and our kids are young. I'm still getting my term policy looked at for underwriting because of health history, but the pending quote is also with Genworth. It would be pretty sizeable - mortgage, college, and a lump sum to provide for my parents in their old age because they are indigent. But it wouldn't be as much as DH's.

We both have modest employer paid policies that don't cost us anything, and DH got me a small policy with his employer up to the amount that I didn't need a health screening. We have a mortgage and DH's student loans left for debt. So if I died DH would immediately have enough to pay for a funeral and probably a year's worth of expenses. But he is a work horse so he would go back to work pretty quickly.

I'm so sorry to hear about your colleague. It's so hard when you lose someone too soon.

@Alba4: I'm going through this process right now. So, I did some internet research, which came up with preliminary quotes. Based on that, I contacted the company that gave me the best quote, and spoke to an agent, who ran a few numbers for me.

We have our car insurance through Geico and love them. I don't think they do life insurance but I searched through their website and it provided me with quotes from multiple companies (at least a dozen). I then chose the cheapest one, filled out the application, then someone came to my house to do the medical exam. It was a very simple process.

@Alba4: DH and I both upped ours through work. DH gets 100% salary through his work and I get 150% salary through mine. We both have added additional policies (through work) covering the following:

-House Pay Off
-New Car (not a vanity thing - but bc we lease not buy)
-College Trusts for both kids
-Student Loans (DH only as I have none)

Not sure if you qualify for any...but I am a CPA and a member of AICPA and MICPA (Michigan) and both have programs with companies for very favorable rates. If you belong to any associations it may be worth looking there too. Otherwise - I think going through work and/or whomever your house/cars/other is through usually makes the most sense.

@Alba4: We save quite a bit going through the same company that we use for car and home insurance.

Before we got it, I didn't know how intense the application process is. We had to get blood drawn and fill out fairly extensive paperwork about our health.

Our term policies are through our credit union. Per someone's advice (I think a life agent) we each have a separate policy, which makes it easier in case of a divorce

We have ours through Farm Bureau where we also have our car and home insurance. Typically there is a financial benefit to consolidating your insurance policies to one company because they will give you a deal. I'm actually a licensed insurance agent, but I work in wealth management rather than for an insurance company. Because I'm a general agent I was able to run quotes for us from a number of companies. Farm Bureau was able to beat them all because we already had policies there.

We got life insurance once we had children, but we really should have gotten it prior, once we bought our home, so that if something were to happen to one of us, the other would be able to pay off the house at the very least.

My husband has life insurance through Liberty Mutual. I have life insurance through Amica.
