I love the rejuvenation lookbook, it shows lots of fixtures in rooms and they have tons of flushmount and semi flush mount options for different styles of homes (everything from victorian, to craftsman, to mid century, to modern). Many of the product pages show the fixture in a room. It's expensive, but could be a good starting point for inspiration. They also periodically do sales.
https://www.rejuvenation.com/content/inspiration/view_ecatalog?pub_id=sklmtxbo9qm&slug=spring-2017

Oh, and you can select from a variety of metal finishes for most things.

We have this flush mount with the brushed nickle clips in our kitchen. The alabaster shade looks nice and it holds three bulbs and really lights the space well. https://www.lowes.com/pd/Portfolio-15-98-in-W-White-Standard-Flush-Mount-Light/50252979

@Foodnerd81: we have really low ceilings too which is the only bummer about my house! We added recessed lighting in the kitchen/dining along with a few light fixtures when we took the wall down in there, and our plan is to add more recessed as we can afford it. Here are the fixtures over our table and attached island in the kitchen:

@Foodnerd81: We also installed these switches throughout the house so we wouldn't have those dangling things taking more space. You can get these at lowes

@Foodnerd81: We have short ceilings, too (under 8 feet) so I did flush mount ceiling fans. This is the pendant over our table (not my actual house.) I put one of these fans in each bedroom, office, and our livingroom. We have a lot of canned lights, too which really helps without taking more ceiling space. DH is 6'3 and we've had no problems.

@Foodnerd81: Interesting! I guess I don't even know how tall our ceilings are....I thought they were low. I mean I know DH can touch the ceiling while just standing, but he's 6'4....so maybe we have 8ft? hmm. I will have to measure!

@MrsBrewer: our ceilings are only 7.5 feet tall, so I don't think we can really do ceiling fans, which stinks because I love having a fan on at night.

Boob lights here too, or ceiling fans with the lights on it. We have ceiling fans in the living room, kitchen, and all bedrooms.

@Foodnerd81: Yes, in order to live with the "boob" light, I insisted on the dark bronze finish and the white frosted globe (not the yellowed frosted which looks dingy).

We actually found a pack of really cheap ones a while ago at lowes. It was like a 6 pack for $60 or something (just one bulb). But it was nice to throw those in our closets, hallways etc to cheaply upgrade the gold brass stuff.

@T.H.O.U.: we have a couple of boob lights with more of an oil rubbed bronze finish, which aren't my favorite but are fine. But we have some that are super shiny 90s brass with a cheesy cover. Since we are putting a lot of work into the foyer and landing anyway (removing so. Much. Wallpaper) I definitely am getting rid of them! Good point about the number of bulbs though.

We have boob lighting. It sucks but with our ceilings there aren't a lot of options. We looked for our kitchen a semi-flush mount with 3 bulbs. Many semi-flush only have 2 bulbs and for our kitchen we really wanted the extra light.

What kind of light fixtures do you have for your low-ish ceilings? We are planning to have ceiling lights installed in the bedrooms this spring, plus change out the bland builder grade boob lights in the halls and kitchen. So basically looking at everything and looking for inspiration. Googling brings up loads of pictures of nice lights but they are rarely pictured in actual rooms.

So if you have them, post pictures if your light fixtures. We are thinking shallow flush mounts pretty much everywhere except overthe kitchen table, but I want something a little prettier and more interesting than what we have.

This is my favorite pendant to go over the table, but I'm not sure I want to commit to brass tones for the whole kitchen.
