@Foodnerd81: I love it. For kids their jackets fit on the bottom small hooks and I pile on some hats on the top. For us it's the opposite; our jackets on top and bottom for scarf/hat.

I have something like this on the side too -

@Foodnerd81: I am horrible at explaining hahah. This is what we have I think -

I have entry rugs on both sides of the door and shoe racks right by the door in the garage. Adults wear slippers and kids just socks/barefeet usually.

@MrstypeA: I love all the hooks and the closed storage up top. We are definitely more of a hook family than hang things nicely on a hanger family.

@Silva: so much space and storage in there! I really like that wood cubby shelf thing right by the door. And funny we have almost the exact same bench in our front entry (the nice one for guests  ).

@irene: DH and I keep most of our shoes in our master closet and try to only keep current/ seasonal shoes that we wear all the time in the entry. So like snow and rain boots are there plus sneakers, but my nice riding boots that i don’t wear a lot and sandals and dress shoes are in the closet. The kids just don’t have that many shoes so they are all in a big shoe rack in the entry. Plus if I leave my four year olds shoes in her closet she pulls them out for dress up. :silly:

@snowjewelz: curious- why large then small hooks? And how do you come in from the garage with shoes out there- everyone has slippers? We have much more space in the basement entry than in the garage anyway.

I don't have a whole mudroom, just a part of the wall when we come in from the garage. I have a storage bench from Target, a row of LARGE hooks that has smaller hooks under, and then a little cork board with hooks underneath for keys. We don't keep shoes inside so our shoes are all in the garage.

@Silva: @MrstypeA: @irene: thank you for the pictures! And thank you everyone for the tips and ideas. My head is swirling with ideas for when we redo the basement.

For now I feel like I made a huge leap by purchasing a simple cheap storage bench. Now both kids can sit side by side in their designated spot and put on or take off their shoes (or have me do that for them). Before they were always fighting over the one seat we had there or sitting on the floor. Progress, one step at a time. :silly:

We have a bench with baskets underneath filled with the kids shoes. Then we have a huge closet to hang all our coats which keeps the mess hidden. I also have a table with a small drawer as a landing spot for keys and mail. Under the table are 2 more baskets that hold our bags. I love everything about it!

We did our kitchen / first floor remodeling and we hired a designer. We have a minature mudroom that goes into the house from the garage. We use it a lot, like the idea but wish it was bigger. This is partially how it looks. The width of it is basically just two of the chalk boards. Very narrow.

https://scontent-dft4-2.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/19424307_10154806276601608_7915939043474590634_n.jpg?oh=3cde3404221a8c54ce144f818b5c6b90&oe=5AFCD13C

Thoughts:
- We have 5 hooks in a very narrow space (three high on the back wall, two low on the side). I wish we had a bit more room because winter doesn't work at all with the school bags, winter coats, hand bags and all. And we only have 2 grown ups and a child!

- I loved the chalkboard door and it was double sided. I stick DS's kindergarten class schedule and things he need to pack daily for his school bag in the inner panel of the door and he checks it every morning and pack his bag. The only complain about it is, if you write something really low (in the hopes that your child would be able to see in that height), and you forget about it, sit on the bench to put your clothes on, your clothes will get chalk on it. Not nice on nice clothes. I made that mistake. But I do highly recommend a chalkboard there.

- The shoe rack theoretically is a nice idea but we (or I) have so many shoes. The shoe bench also goes pretty deep so many times we are just on the floor trying to fetch/dig up our shoes all the way in the back. Wish there was a better solution.

- I like the shoe rack to be divided into two levels (my idea, ha!) so we can accommodate 2x as much shoes (which is still not enough lol)

- The chalkboard enclosed area is very shallow, as you can see it is about 1.25x depth of a shoe box. It really doesn't contain much. Not to mention, brilliantly it was also in the way of the security system so a big portion of it was blocked by the security system equipments.

All in all, I love the idea of a mudroom, but it is so small in our house! I wish it were 40-50% bigger to neatly accommodate our needs (mess).

We just did our Mudroom! I NEEDED closed storage in addition to open storage. I Also went “overboard” on the hooks but my cubby has my work bag and kid/mom backpack and work jacket, warm practical jacket and a vest .. which only leaves 1 free hook, yes you can double up but it gets crowded! I do wish there was a lower drawers or shelf for a basket lower that small kids could reach!

@Foodnerd81: this is random, but one mistake I made that I'll share here so others can avoid it is that I first mounted two modern circular mirrors above the shoe closets we have, opposite the hooks where we hang clothes.

And then I realized that they were just reflecting the messy mass of coats on the hooks. So they had to come down and be replaced. I feel like Magazines always have mirrors in these small entries (for more light maybe?) but it doesn't work if something messy looking is on the opposite side, haha!

This is our entrance. Unfortunately in this house it’s where everyone enters, I’d prefer this as a connector between the garage with a separate entry for guests. Open storage is challenging but nothing in my house looks like a magazine- this mudroom is very functional. Plenty of space for getting dressed and even when we get lazy and don’t put away a stroller or something, there is still room to move.
First photo is from the front door looking right, second is looking straight ahead to the back door. Third photo is of the cubby unit.

@Silva: pictures would be great- and honestly I prefer seeing things how they are in real life than Pinterest perfect! And would it help to know that we have an actual mud room closet that is just a giant dumping ground and hiding place for toys in time out? It’s off the entrance we never use so it’s low on the list to organize. And we have another kitchen cabinet that it just a total mishmosh of things- art supplies in one shelf, medicine and vitamins, and Halloween candy. One day I will reorganize that one...

Our mudroom is one of my favorite features of our house and now that I've lived with one like this, I'm not sure I could manage without it.

Stone tile floor, so its low maintenance and I don't worry too much about water. There is a small area to the left of the door that is just big enough for a drying rack, we keep one there for hanging up wet snowpants and coats (mittens and hats get hung by the wood stove).

There is a large, floor to ceiling cubby/bench set up. So four sections- each section has a lower cubby box where we keep shoes, then there is a bench area. Above that are locker type cubbies with hooks for hanging coats. Above that is another box cubby, and above that is a long shelf that runs the length of the unit. its not super well utilized right now, to be honest, but we keep stuff like beach towels, some off-season gear, bubbles, sunscreen, etc up there.

There is a giant closet with sliding barn-style doors. On one side of this closet we stack wood for our woodstove. On the other side we keep two strollers, as well as a ton of random stuff on shelves. Also not super well organized right now. We are in the process of cleaning/organizing our whole house to make it easier to sell in the future and this is next on my list! We also keep chicken food, bird seed, and some potting soil there for easy access (we also have an outdoor shed, but its nice to have this stuff nearby).

We purchased a standalone cubby system from plow and hearth, and we use it for mittens, hats, scarves, and gardening stuff that lives indoors (as opposed to the stuff in the shed).

We also have room for a separate bench, and a small table which is nice to have to set packages on. We have two boot trays for wet boots. There is also a small cubby area where my hsuband (to my extreme annoyance) keeps a giant pile of tools.

The mudroom has so much space, its not very well utilized right now but we keep a TON of stuff in it. Our basement isn't always dry, so we can't really keep anything down there. My husband has some part of his brain missing that prevents him from putting shit away or being annoyed by the pile of shit in his cubby- but I keep everyone else's relatively organized.

I can try to take pictures later if it would help- but as I've mentioned several times its not well utilized right now so its mildly embarrassing!

We don't have a proper mudroom, but what I do have that I love in our entry is a bench with a large mirror above it. It looks really nice, and - maybe I'm vain - but having the mirror there is great for a quick check as you run out of the house.

We don't have a mud room, but we've done a couple storage things lately that I really like!

We put up three kid height hooks. My son hangs up his coat and bag. My daughter can't really yet but tries (18 months)

Then inside the closet we put a storage unit similar to an IKEA kallax. Each kid has one bin for shoes and one bin for hats/mitts. They both know where to put their stuff back and where to get it out.

@gotkimchi: thanks- that looks a lot more like my house, too!

@looch: I agree open storage never looks as good when it’s actually in use. But I know me and my family and the more steps it takes to put things away (like, open a door, put coat on hanger) the less likely it is to happen. Plus this is in our basement where mostly only family comes in so I just want to streamline getting in and out of the house without losing my sh** on my kids every morning! :silly:

Gah, I loathe open storage. It never looks as good as when it's styled in magazines.

If I had the space, I'd do a big closet with shelves on the bottom for shoes and a coat rack, with a double hung bar on one side and a couple of hooks on the back wall on the other.

Plus a place to sit...it's useful for people of all ages, including myself!

@Foodnerd81: Actually yes - if you have the room, a separate wall for hooks would be ideal! We never actually sit on our bench because the coats are in the way and its always covered in bags, but we only have this one little wall section to cram everything in! Kid coats don't get in the way but mine and DH's do.

We don’t have a mud room, but in our entryway we have a shoe cabinet with sliding doors and a bench, both from ikea. Everyone has a shelf in the shoe cabinet and it is wide enough that we have two small bins for sunglasses, hats, etc., and I set my handbag on it. Under the bench is one larger bin for more outdoor accessories and a tray for wet shoes. It’s compact and does the job. There’s no winter where we currently live, so we don’t have jackets/coats and cold weather accessories to deal with.

@HappyBaker: oh nice! Is it annoying to have hooks above the bench? It always looks like you’d be bumping into the coats and stuff. These Pinterest photos never show it with a real, messy, family living there.
Also totally agree about shoe storage. DH and I can’t even put our shoes away all the time. Kids definitely won’t.

Oh and I'd say open storage for shoes - whether that be baskets or just open shelving - my kids always just dump their shoes right in front of the bench we have instead of putting them away so I don't think they'd ever put them in a drawer or closed cabinet.

We actually installed cabinets (kitchen cabinets) above our hooks and bench to get maximum storage and also have it be hidden so it doesn't matter what we keep in there. Basically like @crazydoglady's picture but above the hooks there are cabinets that go to the ceiling. We store sunscreen, bug spray, random tools, and a bunch of other stuff in there and its really helpful!

@crazydoglady: I love that- one day we maybe will build in something like that! For now the door does open into where we sit to remove shoes and it’s not ideal. I’m thinking about leaving that space open and putting their low coat hooks there.

@misolee: one kind of annoying thing is we still end up bringing backpacks upstairs anyway- so it’s good because it’s less as you walk in, but bad because I am trying to have two designated spots for organization of those kinds of things. Right now only one kid is in preK though.

@catgirl: yes top of my list is a place to put stuff down as I walk in- the mail, my bag, whatever. I just have to make sure I don’t leave lots there.

A designated spot for keys out of LO's reach. A flat surface to put my purse on when I walk in and need to get my shoes and coat off.

We have a little mud room and had a bench and three hooks for couple of years but I just needed more storage. With two kids, their backpacks, ballet bags, multiple coats, hats, etc it just ended up piling up on the bench.

We recently got this
https://www.jossandmain.com/storage/pdp/diehl-60-wall-mounted-coat-rack-lrfy2047.html

And game changer. So on top of my three hooks, it gave me like six more. We put the backpacks on the bottom hooks and jackets on the top. So much more organization and I wasn’t looking through coats to get to backpacks etc.
