@scg00387: you know, it's funny...I've never had any food issues...I always found that to be surprising because I'm a woman living in this culture, my mom complains about her weight constantly, and I have some tendency toward anxiety. My husband has two sisters who both have history of, or current, disordered relationships with food.
I'm just enjoying watching my daughter explore her food. But as I start to think about this as the introduction to her lifetime relationship with food I get freaked out. I want her to have a healthy, enjoyable, enthusiastic relationship with food like I have. It sounds silly, but one of my biggest fears about having a girl was the possibility of someday having to deal with disordered eating.

@Silva: It's something I've spent a lot of time thinking about because of the issues I've watched some of my family members experience. It's weird how ingrained it is to praise him for eating a lot or to coax him to eat more if he hasn't eaten much! My parents persist, haha.

@Silva: I really recommend this book if you're a reading type http://www.amazon.com/Fearless-Feeding-Healthy-Eaters-School/dp/111830859X One of the main points I took away from it is summarized from http://ellynsatterinstitute.org/dor/divisionofresponsibilityinfeeding.php
"The parent is responsible for what, when, where
The child is responsible for how much and whether"

SO basically, we started at 6 months and have always let him lead with how much. I've always offered solids about 2 hours after his nursing session (he has been nursing 4x a day for a long time). We did a mix of BLW and chunky purees; but always did 'loaded spoon' so I loaded it and handed it to him to feed himself. So, he really was in control of how much he ate and I didn't have to worry about his stomach not registering how full it was.

Some days he amazes me with how much he eats, and some days he barely touches anything. I try to give him a small variety at the start, replenish whatever he finishes (in small doses), and end the meal when he seems to be done.

It is SUCH a relief to not stress about coaxing him to eat or fussing at him if he's chowing down. So far so good at 11m, we've had zero issues with continuing to EBF, he is happy, healthy, and seems to really enjoy trying new foods

SUPER long answer to say -- no, I would not limit solids so long as LO isn't being coerced to eat or getting "urged on" or celebrated when eating (which I've read, and seen, cause kids to gorge because they want the attention). Happy eating!

@mrsbookworm: yeah I have no idea how much she gets nursing. We've never done a weighed nurse, and I don't pump (except rarely for date night!)

I asked a lactation consultant about this last week. She said that a 6 month old should be drinking about a quart of breastmilk a day. She said I could give LO as much food as he wanted as long as the amount of nursing didn't change (though I find it a little hard to tell how much he's actually getting while nursing)

@Silva: We're in the same boat! I always nurse her before offering solids though. Are you nursing before hand? She had been finishing about 1.25oz of puréed food but lately she's been wanting more than 2.5oz, so I cut her off and nurse. I wonder if it's a growth spurt? My girl turns 6 months in a week.

Curious about this too!!! LO ate almost an ENTIRE banana this morning and spent the rest of the day barfing up milk so I think we overdid it.. she just finally figured out how to chew and swallow so I think got overly excited.

From what I read (just a tired mommy doing casual internet research) it's best to offer milk first when they are hungry (bottle, breast, formula or BM). That's because they still need to get the majority of their calories and nutrition (and especially fat!) from milk.

I've been doing solids for about 2 weeks now (no purees though), and I just follow LO's cues. If he's not interested I don't force him, and if he loving something (hello cantaloupe) I let him go to town!

I let my son eat as much as he wanted... but he was not much of an eater till 10 months or so, so I don't know what advice to give.
Also we're still nursing at 17 months and he eats 3 full meals a day and 2-3 snacks... That probably doesn't help. :/

I think as long as you're nursing before solids, you can let her have as much as she wants! IF you notice it start to disrupt nursing, then you can cut back.

We started my daughter on solids at around 5.5 months. She is 6 m 1 we. now. We are doing some purees, some BLW- but mostly purees (on the chunky side).

She loves solids. We only give them to her at dinner. We cut her off tonight after she downed one ounce of breastmilk with oatmeal cereal and 2 ounces of a pear / spinach purée. She was panting for more and reaching....and I felt so bad....but that seems like a lot! And I really don't want anything to disrupt breastfeeding.

I know solids before one are "just for fun".... Should I give her as much as she wants next time, or is it a good idea to limit at this age?
