@hilsy85: Hi! I am just digging up this thread. My son (4 months) has a serious lip tie. what came about from your LO's? I am worried about a gap in between the front teeth, but we've had no problems at all breastfeeeding.

@GreenThumb: the dentist mentioned that same thing to us - that it's very common for it to break if there's a fall or a bump but it's no worry, just might bleed a bit.

I'll also add that J at 4 is still a bit of a lightweight, he's 34lbs but eats like crazy (and continues on a steady curve). Definitely wasn't a supply issue as suggested above.

This is so interesting! Thanks @rachiecakes: for adding the photo of your son now. DD has a pretty major lip tie that the dentist showed us at her first appointment at age 2. We EBF with no latch or supply issues until she was 11 months and we had never noticed it before he pointed it out. I wanted to add that the dentist said it is not a concern at this point other than these do have a tendency to be easily injured in LOs and can bleed a lot, which can be scary but not really a major problem.

I'll update with this pic of J's teeth now - I guess some kids do grow into it and not all need to be clipped (unless there's an issue of course!).

@hilsy85: Weight gain is great (85%) and no pain - just soreness if he nurses overnight but I think that is due more to crappy positioning/both of us being half asleep.

I was running the horror through my head of having it clipped at 10 months - I can't even.

@littlebittyhouse: at this point, it would be painful for your Lo to have it clipped. If you're nursing fine, I would just leave it...my Lo has a lip tie as well and I didn't realize it was an issue til 3 months old. At that point he was nursing ok so we just left it. However if you feel like his weight gain is slow, or you're having a lot of pain I would seek out the opinion of your pedi or an ENT.

We had a bad tounge tie & a mild lip tie. I thought about fixing it, but I decided to EP instead. I wanted to pump anyways. So, I did! At some point (maybe 9-11w old), he was old enough to latch well, despite his issues. So, at that point we became 50% pump 50% breast.

Jumping on this because I think we have a lip tie! I was looking at his top teech coming in and was like huh - do all babies look like that??

LO has never had trouble gaining but always had a shallow latch. LC always said that latch was great and I chalked it up to anatomy that despite the shallow latch he is able to actively transfer milk. I usually have to flip his top lip out.

Crazy part is, 10 months in I am still sore some days and he still nurses every 2 ish hours when we are together on the weekends.

Do I bring this up to the pedi? Do I need to worry about it?

@aprk: Tbh not breastfeeding just wasn't an option for me. We spent ALOT of time nursing... Pretty much constantly on/off nurse for a minute maaaybe 2 then back off. We also lived on gas drops bc of the air P would swallow. I did try a bottle but it didn't really help & possibly jeopardizing my supply due to lack of suckling worried me so back to the breast is how we stayed.

I read alot of kellymom on the first few weeks, "are mothers supposed to loving breastfeeding 24 hours a day", & just relied on her output to ensure she was actually eating enough. It was really tough but we got through it!

I really hope you can get it taken care of in office without issue & your pedi supports you in fixing it! (Ours didn't)

@aprk: are you getting it clipped? If its affecting latch/nursing, the recommendation is to have it clipped as soon as possible (the longer you wait the more painful it is, as nerves develop in the area).

DD is lip tied and we didn't do anything about it. We go to the dentist next month for her first check-up and I'm going to ask him about it because there is a gap between her front top teeth.

DS had a lip tie similar to the picture you posted. On the advise of a friend (and LC in training) I went to a local dentist and had it clipped (with a laser). He also examined DS and found that he has a posterior tongue tie (at the back of the tongue) and took care of it with the laser as well. There is a group on Facebook that has lots of resources about tongue and lip ties. I had lots of pain, smooshed nipples, bleeding/cracking as well.

@hilsy85: I've since seen our pediatrician about it. Because there are no current issues and there were no issues with breastfeeding, he wasn't too concerned. He said that because both DH and I have lip ties that didn't cause any speech problems or spaces between our adult teeth DS has a better chance of the same thing happening with his tie. He said if there was a problem with speech or his front teeth in the future it could easily be taken care of with braces, etc.

ETA: DS has always had a problem gaining weight (as discussed above) - this definitely could've been because of his lip tie, but I'll never know. He still has a problem gaining weight and eats anything and everything. Seriously, this kid could eat all day. But again, both DH and I are naturally small people, so it's probably just genes there, too!

Just found this thread because of the other lip tie thread! My LO is also lip tied and had a tongue tie...

@junebugmama: That is SO interesting re: oversupply and tongue/lip tie--LO was tongue/lip tied but never had any issue gaining weight, which I always heard was a side effect, and it's definitely because I had an oversupply in the beginning. I always wondered about that! :)

@rachiecakes: I also have a slight lip tie I think--it caused a very slight space between the top part of my two front teeth. That's awesome that your LO's lip tie never caused any issues for breastfeeding! In older kids, it can cause speech issues or problems with tooth spacing it it's more severe (that's what I'm worried about with my LO)--might be worth seeing a pediatric dentist about if you're concerned? A lot of times the lip tie also gets severed when a child falls and hits his face (which my pedi said happens a lot, lol), so it might get taken care of for you!

I thought you said you didn't have any issues. I wouldn't suggest getting a lip tie done at your sons age, unless its doctor recommended. In the early stages, it might be worth it.

A lip or tongue tie will cause supply issues in most nursing pairs. Tongue tie causes more issues though than the lip.

@runsyellowlites: thanks for sharing that! she sees the specialist Thursday. Her son has been gaining steadily, he's 8 weeks old today. She said he was swallowing a ton of air, spitting up a lot after 30-40 minutes upright after a feeding, etc. She goes back to work next week and I know she's nervous about pumping/nursing/and his lip/tongue tie issues being a bigger problem after she returns to the office.

P was severely tongue-tied. It caused us lots of feeding issues, but didn't cause me any nipple pain.... I did have over-supply issues though so that may have been why I wasn't negatively affected. Our biggest issue was P not being able to stay latched & not being able to get a good seal so she swallowed LOTS of air.

We had it clipped in office by a pediatric dentist at 7 weeks against the recommendation of our pedi & ENT who both said the tie would not cause any issue with breastfeeding. Needless to say P immediately nursed better, more effectively, she stopped swallowing so much air, AND her weight gain improved.

I would definitely look into getting it clipped & if there are any weight gain issues I would require it to be clipped before supplementing. That's my personal stance & what my plan was if we weren't able to find the pedi dentist & our pedi gave me flack.

Hope your friend can get it fixed & move on with nursing her lo! :)
