@mrs.shinerbock: interesting point - I personally do not, because I don't think the shorts are necessarily being designed too short for the age they are intended to fit...it is logical that if I put a five year old in a two year old's shorts, they will be short! :) I do buy longer shorts from Gap - they make one cute girls' style that is basically like cut off skinny jeans

@Anagram: this is exactly how my husband feels! I take tucks in cotton pants or shorts, but can't do denim nicely enough myself.

@lawbee11: cute! Does the drawstring actually tighten? We have some similar ones (with Pom Pom trim) with an elastic waist, and those stay up better in a bigger size than other shorts, maybe bc they are really light.

My girl is real slim with super long legs- we do capri style leggings under dresses, but really they are just short leggings!

Last summer, I couldn't find anything that fit LO2 at the waist that didn't look super short on her (for reference, she turned 3 and was wearing some 18-24 month shorts. They fit but looked like booty shorts and my husband was embarrassed because he thought people would think we purposely bought our toddler short-shorts.) Anyway, what I ended up doing is buying some stuff in 2t and 3t and having my mom take them in at the waist. So now this summer, we can let them out, She basically just folded and tacked each side of the waist.

@T.H.O.U.: My tall skinny girl wears a LOT of dresses and bike shorts. She can't stand it when her pants fall down all the time. In the winter she usually wears highwater leggings and boots since I can never find the perfect combo of length and width for her.

@oliviaoblivia: You know, I didn't think of it til you said this, but we had some H&M baby pants that were kind of like cargo pants with ribbed waist/cuffs - they were meant to be pants, but my girls wore them as capris for much, much longer. Maybe I can find something like that (as opposed to straight up legging capris). Thanks!

@MenagerieMama: Yup! We do have a few of those Old Navy ones, but run into a similar problem (though less drastic) - she's got some 3Ts that'll work and will be only a little on the short side.

@gotkimchi: oh dear, crotch....I didn't even think about the sitting down flashing part....eek! :)

We have some Cat & Jack shorts with a drawstring. Are even those kind too big? We do have to size down one size but I feel like the length is still good.

ETA: This is the type I'm talking about

I bought some boys shorts for DD last summer because I got so sick of short shorts. I'll hem the cotton jersey one a inch or two, but bought some chambray ones from Gap that were the perfect length and didn't look very boyish.

ETA - all the people who don't like the short shorts, do you contact customer service of the brands you buy and let them know?

Can you do skorts? I know LO has some Old Navy ones that we like. The shorts part are a little snugger but the skirt gives some good length. Also - cheap!

We have this problem and shorts that fall down aren't an option. She hates them. The short shorts I don't love, but I think are the better option but lo doesn't like them if she's playing because they're not good for sliding. So what we prefer are sort of Bermuda short length but fit like leggings. Good for running around, enough coverage for sliding and don't show any butt/ crotch

@2littlepumpkins: Totally agree! I think DH is going to think the ones that actually fit her are booty shorts, though! :)

@pinkb: I do those under dresses or tunic tops like @T.H.O.U.: mentioned....I am not a huge fan of bike shorts as shorts without some extra coverage since they tend to be a little sheer!

@T.H.O.U.: True! I have a sneaking suspicion that this style + skorts are going to be the bulk of what she wears, anyway!

My 3 year old wore 12-18 month shorts on our holiday last month. Although it occurs to me that maybe baby boy shorts are longer than baby girl shorts.

I would go for some of the legging style shorts, or what we called bike shorts back in my day. Lol. Sometimes playing in the short shorts they can show too much/ not cover enough in the crotch region. But who wants their pants to fall down all day??

I think your dd would rather have the shorts that aren't falling down, personally! So I'd go with that, and looking for slimmer fitting brands and/or styles.

Which is worse for a little girl:

Shorts that are a few sizes smaller, and therefore a bit too short (show a lot of leg, but no bum - she doesn't have one, anyway! :) ), or shorts that her age-size so that the length is better, but they slide down (potentially revealing her bottom), even with an adjustable waist, and are really gappy at the leg holes.

We have a few pairs of the Gap 1969 skinny mini bermudas that are an ideal balance (in size 2 for a 5 year old, haha)...but they'll be too hot/constraining on some days, I think, since they're a little on the snug side in the rise.

Sidenote: Can you tell I'm going through summer clothes today? This weekend's weather inspired me!
