@Vegmama: I would call and either speak to the office manager, or send a letter and ask that she call you. It is important that the office understands your concern. Tell them it is not personal, but you have concerns about her protocol and how she was with your daughter. I've done that before-not with vaccines, but with a new nurse assistant student in my OB's office. Her blood pressure readings were SO inaccurate that they stressed me out, so after a while, I politely asked that she not see me. Yes, students do need training, but you are well within your rights to say that your initail experience was not one that made you comfortable seeing her going forward.

I'm sorry this happened. Good luck!

@Vegmama: The nurse should have asked YOU if you minded the assistant giving the shots. If there is ever anything "out of the ordinary", then I always ask the patient/parent if it is okay. Even if it is someone observing, the patient/parent has the right to toss the observer out of the room.

This is where they are completely at fault and you have every right to complain.

I can't imagine she will be allowed to draw blood but I would be a little confused about who she is (as in is she a student nurse). Personally I wouldn't be concerned about safety as the nurse was being very vigilant and most a mistakes happen when experienced staff are complacent rather than situations like this.

@Vegmama: thanks for clarifying and good call on emailing the doctor. Find out what this person's scope of practice is, and if she is still in training... If she's still in training, you can probably say you don't want her to be hands on with your care, but I'm not sure if this would be the case if she has been hired on by your doctor's practice. Good luck!

@hilsy85: Thank you. You're right. It's not personal at all.

If they are a medical assistant or nursing assistant, I believe they are allowed to administer medicine or vaccines, just not draw blood. I'll be looking into her credentials. Emailing the doctor now.

@Vegmama: No, hindsight is always 50/50! It's always easier to know afterward what we should have done. You still have the chance to make sure she doesn't draw your blood and that you know ahead of time what protocol you want them to follow in the future.

I'm pretty bad about speaking up until I'm really angry so I'm the wrong person to ask!

Next time I was in the office I would just request for the doctor or the nurse to administer the vaccines. Say you're fine with the other person observing, but you would like someone else to actually give the vaccine.

I would absolutely not worry about hurting her feelings. It's not personal, and this is your baby!

She just introduced herself as an assistant? I think you should ask what medical training she has because it sounds like zero, and this person should not be administering shots, especially on children. I would not be kind or complimentary in this situation. It sounds potentially illegal even.

@spaniellove: What do you think you would do in this case? I'm kicking myself for not following my instincts. I just never want to hurt someone's feelings, but I think I'm looking too deeply into it. It's my kid, and I should have been on it.

I think there's a nice way to deliver feedback, so I might do that.

Umm, was this person medically trained or an assistant??

ETA: I'm all for allowing trainees to care for my family, under the supervision of licensed professionals, however it doesn't seem like the nurse supervising was very vigilant in correcting the "assistant". Also, if this person is an admin person (that's how I initially read your OP) then they have no business in administering vaccines.

I think it's totally fair to say you don't want her drawing your blood. I say this as someone who used to get blood draws almost daily going through IF! It's awful getting that done by someone inexperienced! Certainly everyone has to start somewhere, but...techs should not be getting their training on children. Especially not when it comes to administering vaccines, where there's potential for reactions. I'll admit to not checking the vial info too; there are so many things going on!

Just wanted to add: Please don't blame yourself. It is the clinic's fault for doing this.

Last week, my daughter went in to our family doctor to receive two vaccines. When we get there, a new assistant introduced herself (a small practice), and said she'd be helping out a bit around the office. When it was time to head back, the nurse asked this woman if she wanted to help. I heard them in the room, the nurse was showing her how to fill syringes, and other details. Then, we we went into the room, the nurse asked her if she wanted to do the shots.

She started by wiping down DD's leg without gloves, and the nurse had to stop her to remind her about gloves. Then she did the first shot (so slowly. Like, do it fast & get it over with), and started to put the first band aid on. The nurse interrupted her to say that she should do both shots before the band aids, and there was a fluster and confusion before she did the 2nd shot. By that time, DD was hysterical. She then took her gloves off before putting the syringes in the waste, and the nurse reminded her that her gloves needed to be on the whole time.

My heart was hurting after this. I feel like I should have put my foot down in the beginning to say that I'd rather just have the usual nurse so the shots. I honestly think these were the first shots this woman has ever administered. Shining mom moment. :(

What would you do? I think everyone needs to learn, so that's where I'm torn. I go back in Tuesday to have my blood drawn, and I really don't want this woman drawing my blood. Also, do you think it's worth sending feedback to the office? I would highlight her bedside manner (she's an absolute doll, just not the best at shots), and try to sandwich the issue between two (true) compliments. I don't want to come off as a tattle tale or like, "How dare you hurt MY child".

Also, my friend pointed out that I should always double check the vaccines before they are given. It's ok to ask to see the vial to record the batch # (to keep record of in case of strong reaction). Does anyone else do this?

*This is not a post to spark a vaccine debate*
