@erinbaderin: When I was growing up, our real tree was in a formal living room that had doors on it and we kept them cold to save on heat. So it didn't bother me much as a kid since it was sort of set aside.

When I got live trees as a young adult in places with open layouts, I couldn't figure out why I felt so crappy for several years... I finally got an allergy test because of other seasonal allergies, and sure enough, pine was on there.

We buy a boxwood wreath, keep it on the outside of the door, and it lasts FOREVER! I usually throw it out around March when I realize it's way too far after Christmas to have it up and it's always still green.

@MaryM: The head of my daycare was saying the same thing to me on Friday, that they just always thought her brother got sick at Christmas and it took 20 years to realize he was allergic to pine. They got a fake Christmas tree and problem solved.

@regberadaisy: Watch out for subtle things. It took me a long time to realize I had an allergy to pine. For years I kept just thinking I coincidentally always had a cold around Christmas time.

@MaryM: that's a good idea! If it bothers DH I can always move it to the outside of our side door. We use that door daily. I was going to place it on the inside of the main entry door. Which opens into the living/dining/kitchen.

They last a month to 2 months. It depends on humidity levels and cold.

It depends on where they're placed. On an exterior door, they last a long time if it's cold out. Inside, I would imagine they dry out earlier.

My godparents sent me one last year and I can say, as a person with allergies, it was nice to have that welcoming piney smell when I came through my front door. But I kept it on the outside of the door, so not inside the house. I would figure it would still cause allergies if it was indoors.

I live in TX and it's pretty warm here in Dec, but I usually buy a wreath the weekend after Thanksgiving and it is still good at New Years.

@regberadaisy: no idea about allergies but we got one last year and it lasted forever! After about 2 months I stuck it in the basement and its still there! haha

Hasn't lost any needles but is super dry and I can still smell it a year later - smells so good!!!

(we got it from a local farm)

How long do they usually last? If someone in your family is allergic to pine and you can't have a real tree. Does just a wreath bother them too?
