I lived in a couple of apartments as a kid, and I never minded. I actually liked them! We'll be having our first in a one bedroom (just due to lease timing, we don't want to move RIGHT before the baby because what if he/she comes a couple of weeks early?) and moving to a 2 bdrm hopefully around when the baby is 6 months old. My parents had me in a studio for the first few months!
eta- And the move is more for us than the baby!

Nothing wrong with having a baby in an apartment. We are going to be in a 1 bedroom apt for teh 1st year of baby's life and we are totally okay with that. When we do buy a place it is like to be a two or three bedroomed apt. That is NYC living for you. If I had a spare $3 million hanging around then I would get a brownstone, but that is unlikely to ever be an option haha.

we moved to a big house from an apartment when i was 16. i think growing up in a smaller space was much better for our family. we were much, much closer. once we moved to a big house, everyone stayed in their own rooms and we hardly saw each other. when we were in a small apartment, shared rooms, etc. we were forced to interact.

that said i'd still prefer to live in a house, but a just big enough house. not a house with any extra room. :-)

Thank you everyone for your responses, it has made me feel better and of course, I was just looking for a little reassurance :) All of our friends/family have houses so I was just feeling like I wasn't doing something right. Although, we have our finances together just fine! We are just not in a position to own our own home right now. Thanks again!

we currently live in an apartment, we do plan to move to a bigger place soon but it may be another apartent first before a house. we do have a swimming pool in our apartment complex as well as lots of space for riding a bike and playing. for the first 6 years of my life my parents lived in an apartment and I was happy because I had friends in the complex and there was lots of space outside and playground for the kids. Not all apartments are equal.

It was important to us to buy before TTC (well, we bought before getting engaged!), but we’re in our 30’s/40’s so we’re in a different place financially and career stability-wise than some younger couples. If buying is going to make you house-poor, then it doesn’t make much financial sense to do so if you can rent and sock away money in savings at the same time.

I don’t think owning a home is a requisite for having children; you just should make the best financial decision for you and your family. I think people (especially older generations) tied owning property to financial stability, and that isn’t really the “rule” it once was, nowadays. It makes sense to try to be as financially stable as possible before TTC, but whether that means buying or renting is a personal decision.

I grew up in a house, but since I now live and work in NYC my kids will be raised in an apartment unless we transfer our jobs. It works for some couples when the Mom can stay home and not deal with a 1.5-2hr commute each way, but since our salaries are 100% the same, that's not an option for us. And I wouldn't want my DH commuting that long every day, that is a recipe for weight gain and depression IMO.

I grew up in a house but since being on my own, have only lived in apartments. We live in an apartment now and see no problem raising our baby in an apartment. There's several parks and playgrounds close by. The baby has her own room and plenty of space to play and hang out.

it's funny because in other societies around the world like in many Asian countries, if you live in an a hi rise apartment you're considered "living the dream".

i don't think it matters as long as your family is happy.

@looch: there is a lot of stigma surrounding "get married, buy a house, have a baby" at least from where I'm located. I can understand wanting some reassurance, where so many people think you should own a home before ttc, that an apartments okay. Not that everyone says that - but I got that a lot, comments like "you're buying a house first right?" "so when are you going to buy a house?" etc. I actually went through the same questions as OP :)

I have never in my 28 years NOT lived in an apartment. My bedroom growing up was a room divided with office cubicle walls to make two bedrooms for me and my brother.

I consider myself normally abnormal with reasonable quirks that have nothing to do with living in an apartment.

I grew up in a house in the 'burbs, but love living in the city for now, which in turn means living in an apartment. I agree with HILSY85, I think living in an apartment is much easier to manage in terms of cleaning, yard work, etc! Maybe my feelings will change once we have kids and they are old enough to run around and play outside.

We live in NYC and so are 99.9999% going to be in an apartment for the rest of our lives! Both DH and I grew up in an apt and I really don't think it's a big deal...we weren't worse off for it at all. I think it's much easier--you don't have to worry about maintaining a lawn or a house, and if something breaks there's generally a super in the building to come fix it.

We were in a townhouse and bought a house when I got pregnant. I wasn't worried about the baby not having a good childhood, I was more worried about things being hard for me. I didn't want to deal with lugging everything up and down stairs, dragging a baby and groceries through the pouring rain because we didn't have a garage, walking the dog and baby because we didn't have a fenced in backyard, etc.

All of our neighbors had small children and they survived it. I'm just lazy I guess.

when they are younger, all they really need is love and attention! there are options to get out of the house - parks, stores, etc.

I know there are plenty of families that live in apartments. I don't think there is anything wrong with raising a family in an apt.

I think all that matters is how good of a parent you are. It doesn't matter if you live in a studio apartment, a 2 bedroom apartment, a rented townhouse or a house. As long as you make it work, you'll be fine.

I would love to move into a house but it's not the best time for us. There was a time where we hoped to buy a home before starting a family. Unfortunately, life got in the way and it didn't work out that way. We have already plans on how we transform our apartment to make room for a nursery. It's going to work for us. We will hopefully buy a home in a couple years so apartment living is currently temporary for us.

ETA: Think of it this way, living in apartment with a baby will be slightly easier. You won't have to deal with all the expenses of a home. Plus, now a days, I'm seeing more and more people having trouble being homeowners. There are definitely ways you can make apartment living be more positive.

So I have this weird idea in my head that its not fair to our baby/child to be raised in an apartment. I know its crazy because baby will have their own room, everything else they need etc. Growing up my family and everyone we knew lived in a house, so I just feel like we are not doing something right. Someone tell me I'm crazy :)

I'm curious what everyone's thoughts are on this subject! Do you/would you live in an apartment with a baby/child, why or why not?
