I think the best storage solution for kids involves bins. Ikea's Trofast is fabulous for things that have a lot of pieces and you can customize the sizes of the bins.

We have the Expedit shelf horizontally laid in our family room, which doubles as the entertainment center with our TV on top. Over time as the boys have gotten older, all of the photos and knick knacks that used to be in the different cubes have been replaced with toys and books. It serves pretty well to house all their junk!

Haven't thought properly through safety issues yet, so you might want to disregard ;)

@Foodnerd81: we have something that looks like the 2nd pic @Smurfette: posted (ours is from crate and barrel I think). It's horizontal, and basically his toys and books have taken over all the shelves, since we spend most of our time playing in the living room. On top of the bookcase (so along the horizontal edge), we have our books, that LO can't reach, and we put some frames up there that he has no interest in for whatever reason.

@Foodnerd81: Mine DH thought that I was nuts when I had him bolt the shelves to the wall in our condo, before I was pregnant. Your DH is crazy with that car one.

@Smurfette: Seriously, he acts like I'm this crazy person about safety, then 1) doesn't read the car seat manual and thinks he can just "figure it out"; 2) doesn't install the wall mount correctly, apparently, and 3) SUGGESTS I HOLD C IN MY LAP WHEN WE ARE ONLY DRIVING TWO BLOCKS!

Yeah, I forgot about that one until right now. He thought it would be OK since we weren't going far, but it was on a real road, with an intersection. And he didn't understand why I flipped out. ("It was just a suggestion")

But I digress. I'm still worried about her smashing her face into the bottom corners.

@Foodnerd81: Yeah ours look the same. I am 99% sure it has a spot to bolt at the top and the bottom. Maybe our brand is different. But we never put foam on the edges for R. She doesn't bother them too much since we keep the bottom shelves empty cause we had DVDs and she would throw them all on the floor.

@Smurfette: Also, I have been thinking something like the second one you posted, on it's side. Then maybe some wall mounted narrow shelves higher up.

@Smurfette: Hm- I thought there was only a spot for the anchor on one corner-- if we could anchor it more solidly it would solve half the problem. Do yours have corners that jut out? You can see in this pic how the shelves stick out and have sharp corners, not sure what we would do about that since she just pulls on the padding, making the shelf more unstable.

We have this one from Target. It lays horizontal. Then a couple bins to put smaller toys in. DH's office/half playroom is right off our living room.

We have the leaning shelves and they are anchored to the wall in a couple spots. R climbs on the bottom shelf and sits on it, but knock on wood, that's all so far

What about a shelf like this?

We currently have leaning bookshelves in our living room, which also pretty much functions as our play room. It is becoming obvious that they are not going to last long, as C becomes more mobile and more curious. They are anchored to the wall at the top but she is now trying to climb onto the bottom shelf, and I'm worried about her falling into the corners of the shelves but if I try putting corner pads on them, she pulls on them and the whole bookshelf twists from where it is anchored. Not good.

So, we are sadly planning on getting rid of them, but will still need some kind of storage and shelves, both for our stuff (up high) and it would be nice to have shelves to put her stuff in. We don't want the room to totally look like a playroom though, since it's pretty much our only room- our condo is pretty much two bedrooms and one big living room kitchen area.

What kind of furniture do you have that is functional, but safe for curious toddlers with no sense? Bonus points for pictures :)
