We have two toothbrushes - I have one, and he gets one, and I brush his teeth while he brushes the teeth of elephant, one of his bath toys. Elephant gets a LOT of praise for opening his mouth really wide and being really calm about having his teeth brushed, and that seems to have helped.

I let her have her own toothbrush too and let her do it first. Then I'll say it's my turn and she'll let me do it then.

The light up toothbrush saved us, she gets excited about it now. She's older when we used it (closer to two) but the fighting has stopped.

I keep a tooth brush in her bathroom too. We used to have her hold my tooth brush and brush my teeth while I brushed hers. It took a while but letting her jam it around in my mouth distracted her enough that I could do hers. I can't remember exactly when we started doing that. She's two now and we usually don't have to do that anymore but we still have occasional nights where she just won't cooperate.

She stopped fighting it when we started allowing her to "brush" her teeth. Usually that means she chews on the toothbrush and eats the toothpaste, but once I'm done brushing my teeth, she'll let me do hers after I rinse the brush. We also brush our teeth at the same time.

We let our lo bring a toy with him to the sink and he gets to brush his "friend's" "teeth" after we brush his. We also let him do the brushing first, and then we follow behind as quickly as possible. Some nights its a fight and I do the best I can and hope it will be better the next day.

I'm not sure if it would work on a one-year old, but we used Elmo's music video about brushing teeth. Also, we let him try to brush our teeth at the same time.

Cool toothbrush (one that sings or lights up or something like that?) and kids toothpaste?
J didn't like brushing his teeth either but I got him a toothbrush that lights up, flashes and shuts off when you're done. He thinks it's really cool. And loves the taste of the bubblegum toothpaste.

LO haaaates it when we try and brush his teeth. He clenches his mouth closed and turns his face. How do we get a 1 year old to let us into his mouth?! When we first started 2 or 3 months ago, we would hold our own toothbrush to our mouths as an example, and he would let us brush for a few seconds. Then after a few weeks, the struggle began. Did anything work for you?
