@Chastenet: hope it works for you! I was also pretty upset when my lo was getting diaper rash in her cloth diapers.... I chose cloth because I thought it would be better for her tushy!

@artbee: oh, I didn't realize that build up could be such a problem. Thank you , I will definitely try an extra rinse cycle!

@tysonja: Thank you! I never thought to look up bloggers who use soap nuts with cloth diapers. I spent lots of time researching which diapers to buy but not so much researching washing techniques! I'm going to get a separate detergent for diapers. Sticking with the soap nuts for the rest though :)

i don't know that much about soap nuts but after you mentioned it i was intrigued! (thank you!!) -- i did a quick search to see if anyone had written about soap nuts + bum genius 4.0's and i found some comments that said it worked for them and others that said it didn't -- here is one blogger's comments on it -- from: http://www.passionatehomemaking.com/2009/06/soap-nuts-faqs.html anyway, i thought the whole topic was pretty interesting! hope it helps!

Question: Do they work well for cloth diapers?

Yes, I have had great results using soap nuts to wash all my variety of cloth diapers. I have various pocket diapers, prefolds, covers and AIO’s and they are all clean and fresh smelling after using this soap nuts.

UPDATE: Please note that after extended use of soap nuts with my cloth diapers (Bum Genius pocket diapers), they started to repel and leak profusely. Once I switched back to Charlies Soap for my dipes, they began working properly. So I can unfortunately no longer recommend their use for cloth diapers.

@Chastenet: We were using the same detergent on diapers and clothes but it was still causing build up on her diapers even though there were no issues anywhere else. We weren't rinsing out enough and it wasn't specifically made for cloth diapers so I switched to one that was, added one more rinse, and haven't had a problem since.

My first suspect would be the detergent as well. I have very sensitive skin, and I do ok with most fabrics (the dyes get me, especially with heavier fabrics like wool). However, I do awful with most detergents/soaps/perfumes. I break out terribly and very quickly. We fully anticipate this being an issue with any LO's as well.

@MrsHotDog: no, I never heard of diaper swappers, I'll have to check it out.

@tysonja: @artbee: I don't think it's detergent, I use organic washing nuts for all my laundry and haven't had issues with any of her other clothes that were washed this way.

oh! i just read your awesome birth story and noticed you are in paris -- perhaps do a bit of research on the water type and quality in your area, it could affect the way your diapers are being cleaned in the wash, depending on if it is hard water. soft water, etc! definitely make sure that the brand of detergent + type of water + amt of detergent + # of rinses/temperature is what it should be for your area/machine! :) it's a lot of think about, but once you get the right combo it should work for you -- assuming your sweet girl is not allergic to the actual fabric of the diapers :). if it is all too overwhelming right now while you are still recovering from birth and taking care of a newborn, don't hesitate to go back to disposables for as long as you need to until you get it all researched out! :) there is always time to try cloth again in the coming weeks/months! :)

Yep - I have read that sometimes it is detergent buildup? I've read to do a few washes with no detergent. Hope it is that and not an allergy to synthetics :(

She could definitely be allergic to synthetic materials but I would also double and triple check that you are rinsing out the diapers thoroughly during the wash process. She might just be reacting to the detergent build up.

Have you ever read diaper swappers? They have some amazing insight on these kind of things.

perhaps check to see if it is the detergent (or amt of detergent) you are using for the bg 4.0's that she might be allergic to? hope it works out!

we are using nature clean (powder) with our bg 4.0's and using only 1/4 the 'recommended amt' from the box, as per cotton babies' recommendations. so far so good! :)

YES!!! We started DS in fuzzibunz when he was a week old. He developed the craziest diaper rash. I felt awful. We went back to sposies but were determined to make it work since we invested the $$. We tried grovias with organic cotton and those didn't irritate his bum. Used those for a few weeks, then tried the FB (and we had one BG too) again and he was fine. It was likely a case of just overly sensitive skin.

I hope your LO won't have sensitive skin for too much longer. Just keep trying every now and then.

We made the switch to cloth diapers when DD was about 10 days old. Within two days she developed a serious case of diaper rash. I didn't put two and two together until we went to a previously scheduled pediatrician's appointment. Upon seeing the rash, the Dr immediately said that she was likely allergic to her cloth diapers and that we should switch back to disposables.

I am of course disappointed and hoping that she is not actually allergic to her diapers! I purchased 26 BumGenius 4.0s and was really happy with them for the 3 days I actually got to use them. They were quite an investment and although I can try and sell them I will never get all my money back... Plus then I'll have to find another brand that isn't polyester and that DD's skin can handle. I'm going to keep her in disposables for another 2 weeks or so and then try and gradually reintroduce the BumGenius'. I'm hoping she isn't really allergic.

Has anyone else had issues with cloth diaper allergies? What did you do? Any particular brands that worked better for you? If your LO had an initial reaction, was it better when you tried again later?
