YES. For the first month of fall, I had to battle with LO to get him to wear anything but his natives. What worked was basically waiting until we got to the park/somewhere he wanted to run around, and putting them on them. He understands that he needs shoes on to run around, so he would keep them on then. And once I knew that the shoes weren't uncomfortable, I just tried distraction, and making the rule that when we're outside we have to wear shoes.

Yep, I bought LO some nice ballet flats to wear for family pictures and she said "ouch too small, i wear my boots." well her boots do not match, and these are not too small.

My 2 year old is the same way. I've had to buy the exact same colored TOMS for several seasons now because that's all she will wear. I can get her to wear rain boots because "peppa pig weats boots to jump up and down in muddy puddles" and I can get her to wear snow boots because she wants to play in the snow. But otherwise, she REFUSES to wear new shoes. especially dress shoes.

I may try the light up shoes too. And maybe I'll follow Mrs. Bee and show her a youtube video to distract her.

My son is the same way with new books. Let's me open them, then says no and pushes it away. Toddlers are funny. I would just keep trying, but keep it positive. Maybe have the shoes around him when he doesn't need to put them on. Or have him find your shoes so you can put them on, then find his shoes...even better if it's a new pair of your own shoes so you can talk about them being new... Good luck!

DS does the same thing. He gets used to one pair and then that is all he wants. Distraction works best. He usually forgets once he's worn them a little while. He also doesn't like them to be tight at all.

Thanks for the tips ladies, I will definitely try the light up shoes. I know that it is likely a phase, but I just want him to wear the warm, nice blue shoes I bought him!!

@fairy: I think that he is you! He likes everything just so, like socks straight etc. I have tht tendency too so I get it but when we are trying to get out the door, it's like ' why won't you just put these flipping shoes on!'

Oh no! I haven't experienced this yet with my daughter, but I worry about it because I remember being like that when I was little! I hated when my shoes were new and not broken in yet and I was also super particular about them being the exact same tightness when tied and my socks couldn't be the slightest bit bunched.. it used to be a 10+ minute ordeal getting my shoes on up till about 3rd grade! :x

that is very common. olive also gets very attached to certain shoes. luckily she's pretty easily distracted. i let her watch a short youtube video and put the new shoes on and once she's out playing in them, she usually forgets.

but yes to the light up shoes! i bought a pair for olive because i was tired of her shoe wars every morning. she actually likes her new balance sneakers best now because they enable her to run the best.

My youngest freaks out over things he's not used to. I think he even did it with new shoes before too; but I started to make it fun for him to wear it. Maybe get him something with a fun character that he likes or even (as annoying as it can be sometimes) shoes that have lights? Stride Rite makes a lot of shoes with characters and their shoes are usually very comfortable. You could help him get used to it at home first too.

Has anyone had any experience with LO refusing to wear new shoes!? He has been wearing a canvas pair all summer and now refuses to wear anything else - to the point that I had to buy a second pair of the same shoes. I wouldn't care so much, but they are canvas and won't work in the colder weather, plus even his second pair are getting raggedy and as they were s aummer shoes - I can't replace them.

Any time I try to put his new shoes on, he screams, takes them off etc. His daycare teacher said she would try, but got the same result. I have tried different shoes, in case those are hurting, but same result.
Any tips!?
