@MarieJ: my LO used to rub her gums on my nipple / breast when teething and I always figured it was her way of relieving the itchiness of the new teeth cutting through!

We usually had an uncomfortable week or so while LO adjusted her latch to accommodate her new teeth and then we were back to pain free nursing again. LO is almost eight months old with eight teeth and now only bites when she's being a wee punk :-)

@Weagle: thanks for the advice! I'll be on the lookout for teeth.

@MusicaV: it's a slow pinching pressure. She never rips her head away, just chumps down on my nipple & grind?

Hmm, is it the sudden clamp and ripping her head away, or a slow pinching pressure? DS had phases where he did both. For him, it's always at the end of the nursing session. Now I say "No, you nurse like a big boy or you're done." Sometimes I give him one or two more chances, but at that point I can anticipate if he's going to do it again and stop him before he clamps down.

@MarieJ: Yep, sounds like what LO did. I think it's probably due to teeth. She'll probably stop when they pop through. Try to push her into your boob to get her to release instead of pulling away. Or hold her nose for a second. Pulling away is the instinct, but it can cause some boob damage :). Teeth aren't bad though. Your LO's latch may change a little, but otherwise you probably won't feel the difference!

@Weagle: my LO sort of gnaws down on my nipple, if that makes sense. I tried feeling for teeth but I don't know if I feel anything yet. I'm scared of her having teeth!

LO did this too. She would grind them, not bite. After teeth she bit a few times, and I figured out she was doing it right before teeth broke through.

@SleepyMonkey: thanks! I think she was done when she did it, but it caught me so off guard that I jumped in shock/ pain before I told her no biting. I really think she was trying to massage her gums so, I'm going to have to try to give her a teething ring more often. :)

this happened to us too, around 6 months. she didn't have any teeth yet but it still hurt a little bit. i'd tell her sternly "NO BITING" and she would grin with her big gummy smile. i found that she only did that when she was done with nursing. is your LO done, or is it before she finishes nursing?

LO had her two bottom teeth come in a few weeks ago, and last night was the first time she bit me since they first came in...again, it was because she was done and it didn't hurt that much. she again smiled at me when i said no biting. i could be wrong, but i feel like she doesn't bite with full force when she does it, she's just playing.

long way of saying, i don't know how to stop it!

Not a very nice feeling at all! LO is 6.5 months and since yesterday has been biting down on my nipple with her gums. Thank God she has no teeth yet because I can only imagine how much more painful that would be.

Has this ever happened to anyone? Is it pretty common? What did you do? I've tried telling her a stern no, but she just laughs and tries to put my Breast back into her mouth. She obviously thinks it's hilarious. She's done it at every nursing session (multiple times) since yesterday morning.

How fun.
