Ds gags a lot too so we really water down his food. He does enjoy most things, but it helps if we mix in banana or applesauce. Randomly he will refuse to eat more than a few bites sometimes so we just keep trying. I figure eventually he will adapt and want solid food all the time so theres no point in rushing

My LO is the same age and not really into food. My LO prefers to have some control, and will self feed mum mum, do okay on pouches, and likes to hold the spoon - with or without me also holding it. We will go back and forth between the pouch and using the spoon. Also, mixing in some breast milk helps. I think LO will prefer self feeding non-purees, but I am waiting until after our 9 month appointment for that. The best we have ever accomplished is finishing a 4 oz pouch in three meals, but recently we have not come anywhere close to that, and I doubt he is getting significant nutrition from solids. LO does like to drink water from a straw cup, so I have thought about making a smoothie.

Xander had absolutely NO interest in foods until around 7.5 months, and even then it was mostly rice cereal and some fruits and it wasn't very often! We just kept offering, but tried not to force anything. And then we increased how many "meals" he got gradually until he was eating about 3 meals a day around 10/11 months.

Now at 13 months, he STILL eats just the purees and has no interest in table foods. But he loves to eat, so... whatever I guess! Babies move at their own pace! Just keep offering, but don't worry about it too much! (And trust me, I know how stressful this can be - I was totally freaking out that Xander wasn't eating in the beginning)

This is exact same thing that is happening with C and they are like 3 days apart. We have tried the BLW approach because I'm just too lazy to do purées. She loved bread or anything bread related like naan, crackers, etc. She will mum them and get them soggy but I'm not sure she's actually consuming anything. She didn't like avacodo either, but did seem to like asparagus and carrots that were roasted in Olive oil and salt and pepper. The flavor and coating were what she really liked.

We also got a silicone feeder and again no interests there. We've tried the pouches too with no success.

She still had big leg rolls and belly rolls on her so I figure she's getting enough, but I agree it would be nice to have her eat more regular food.

Good luck and let me know if you find anything that works!

Yes. K was very slow to start on solids. It was really frustrating until about 9-10 months. My surefire fruit to mix with everything was pears. Pears + green beans. Pears + carrots. Pears + yogurt. You get the idea. She started taking more table foods around 10 months, things she could mash. But before her birthday she stopped wanting most table foods and pushes them out with her tongue or refuses to open mouth. So I'm back to purees at 13 months. Our ped always just says "keep offering." Good luck!

@lawbee11: Have you tried the pouches? Sadie is SUPER PICKY, but loves them. I started them around 7 months, and by 9 months she was eating them on her own. Maybe she'd like being able to suck the food out instead of eating off the spoon. I like the Earth's Best Organic pouches best, but we do some Up & Up's too.

My baby didn't really start eating much until 9-10ish months and even then it was pretty hit or miss! We did BLW by necessity... just kept dropping stuff on her tray... it's much less tiring than trying to spoon feed. They catch on eventually, although I'm not gonna lie, she's still pretty special about her food.

Do you have one of those mesh things that you can put food into?

http://www.amazon.com/Munchkin-Fresh-Food-Feeder-Colors/dp/B0009ET93Q

B s obsessed with those things! That might be a good way for her to start trying some different foods? B loves strawberries, pears, oranges. I'm way to afraid to do BLW as well. B had no interest in solids for a while either. Now she loves them. I got some baby youghurt made with whole milk and no added sugars and mix that with her cereal. It's the only way she will eat the oatmeal. For dinner she loves the purred spaghetti and meat sauce I made. Every time I try and give her chicken or salmon, she gags and spits it out. It just takes time to figure out what they like and don't like.

We haven't tried meat yet--she spit up with just the smallest chunk of avocado so I can't imagine meat will go over well. And I just can't do pureed meat...it will make me gag!

I'm making mashed potatoes tonight. Maybe I'll try giving her some before I add the salt and all that.

Is there a fruit she likes? I had to isolate the fruit purées and we found out she really likes the Gerber organic apples (from Baby's R us) so we mixed it into every meal, even with meats. I even dipped scrambled eggs in it. Gross looking but she will eat it. I also clap and cheer after every bite then give her a yogurt melt. She loves those yogurt melts. Feeding can take an hour. Surprisingly, solids has been my most stressful adventure as a first time mom.

E rarely eats her purees for me or DH. She eats for her grandparents and gobbles up her food at daycare but she clamps her mouth shut for us!! She will eat toast and carrot puffs and bits of steamed veggie but she is a little tinker when I try to spoon feed her!

Is your LO in daycare? I was AMAZED on E's first day when I saw her pick up some toast and start munching it! She watched the other kids and copied them! I had never given her toast because I was scared of her choking but I do now and she loves it. I also give her cream cheese on soft bread - always goes down well.

It's probably not the same thing, but we've been having issues with B's tongue and eating. He likes to eat, but he also still tongue thrusts and can't properly control the food in his mouth. He starts OT tomorrow to work on his feeding issues. It's not a big deal and the OT says it shouldn't take long to catch him up.

I'm sure she just loves the boob, but maybe it is something to look into if she doesn't start eating soon? I only bring it up because I know she loves her tongue as much as B does.

LO had a rough time with solids too. We just kept trying. Finding a consistent time of day to feed him solids seemed to help. We wouldn't skip a day, and though he still wasn't pleased about them, he started to get better after about 2 weeks.

LO also had a strong gag reflex and still does even now at 18 months. We can barely brush his teeth without him gagging. My only advice is to keep trying, and eventually LO might start to tolerate it!

Yes, keep trying! Keep offering foods multiple times, don't assume after one or two rejections they don't like something.

And playing is good, playing will eventually lead to eating. Let her explore.
