I asked my almost 4 year old if he wanted to do a music class because he sings around the house all day every day. He said no and I signed him up anyway. If he hated it for the first month I wasn't going to make him keep going but we just ended our second month of it and he loves it! There were tears at the first one and now he doesn't even look back when he goes.

Like others have said, it really was about not knowing what to expect but once he actually had fun doing it, he's all about it!

I signed up lo 1 for soccer and gymnastics when she was younger but she asked for ballet lessons. LO 2 asked for soccer and ballet!

I don’t think that’s unusual at all. Many adults even don’t really like to veer outside of their comfort zone and engage in activities they don’t know much about; I don’t expect littles to be any different really.
LO is in ballet and it was partially her choice and partially our choice. She loves dancing (and singing and performing generally) and so we talked with her about dance class. She’s super into it. I don’t expect mastery of a skill or social interaction (she gets plenty of that at school), but just for LO to have new experiences and to broaden her world some. Even though she always has a great time and loves class, she sometimes won’t want to go because of course given the choice, she would rather stay home and play with her toys and me all day. I get that, but that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t try new things and have new experiences (especially when she obviously enjoys the experience a lot!)

DS is only 2.5, but we just kind of decide for him. To be fair, we haven't done that much though. Last winter we did swim lessons, partially because I thought he'd like them and also because we were headed to FL in February and I wanted him to be comfortable in the water.

We've also thought about signing him up for indoor soccer, which I think I'll do this fall/winter. My thinking for soccer is that it's good for him to get some energy out when he can't play outside, plus he likes playing with balls :silly: .

@Bao: Does she have any close friends you could sign her up with? We've always signed up for extracurriculars along with a friend and that helps LO feel comfortable.

DD1 was the exact same when she was 3ish. We did an open gym at a gymnastics place, and she always interacted really well with the other kids there and the staff (who also teach the kid classes). But whenever I asked if she wanted to do a class by herself ("no, mommy would just watch you from right over there"), she said no. So we held off for a couple months, and then I just signed her up and figured we would give it a shot for one session. She was a little hesitant on the first day, but ended up loving it.

ETA: we also are taking a break from everything this summer (except some play-based camps at her preschool), just to keep her from getting burned out on any one thing...or on activities in general! lots of park and play at home.

My son is only 2.5, but we just signed him up for things. We've done swimming, which he can take or leave, and gymnastics which he loves - we haven't done it for the past few months and he keeps telling me I should sign him up. I know the gymnastics places around here let you try a class for free, maybe you could let her try a few things that way and see what appeals?

I wouldn't worry about extracurriculars at this point unless she really wants to do something in particular. I know it's popular to do group sports, dance, etc., but if the goal is to start to develop mastery of a skill at a young age, the best learning setting is almost certainly one-on-one. If the goal is primarily social, I think group lessons are not the best place for that either. We did several group extracurriculars and the child-to-child interaction was actually quite minimal and superficial during the class. Classes were sort of useful to meet other children and parents/exchange phone numbers, but we've had much better success meeting people at the park (volunteering at our local park has been really good for meeting people and learning new and interesting things, plus it's free!), library, and other places we like to go than at group classes.

I think the hard part with some activities is they dont know what to expect.

For example, could you take her to a dance or gymnastics studio to watch a class and then ask her if thats something she would like to try? Or go to a soccer field to watch kids play soccer?

This is my son, to a tee! I keep asking him what he wants to do on the weekend for a class, and he always says "nothing."

The problem is that he has to do something on the weekend, otherwise he gets bored, so I am going to look into the sports complex a town over from us. He's going to a boys gym class and I will take a fitness class while he's there.

There are always trial classes, you can basically go for one class free.

I just signed A up for dance without asking her. She didn't really like it at first, but by the end she loved it! Now she says she can't wait for it to start again

My oldest LO is almost 4, and so far when I ask her about certain activities I could sign her up for, she doesn't seem interested. She isn't the best with larger groups of kids, so maybe that could be her fear...but then again she's never attempted anything so I don't want her to never have the chance. I also don't want to sign her up for her to not like it. Maybe a smaller group setting like a swimming class would be ideal to start with?

If your LO is in a sport or activity, did they show interest in it or did you just sign them up? Basically, how did you decide to sign them up?
