@Mrs. Tiger: yes we struggle with doctor visits too. Today I broke out a pack of mini m&ms and that helped! Lol and he has a recent obsession with stickers so my mom got him a little notebook to collect them in. That kept him busy for a little bit. :)

@jhd: Just seeing this! Glad he's doing better now. D went through periods like this too, and still does now for non-therapy doc appointments. I bring toys (hot wheels), board books, etc. Agree to bringing whatever toys from home you can incorporate in the session.

@matador84: that's funny :) whatever works!

@MrsRcCar: it's funny I was so upset about this and it was less than 2 months ago. Since then LO has learned ten or more signs and he's much happier at speech again. I didn't even have to break out my emergency chocolate I had thought about using ;)

This sounds crazy but both my brothers did speech therapy when they were younger and would always get a spoonful of Peanut Butter when they were done.

@jhd: we have therapy appointments at the hospital. The hospital has a smoothie place. As long as they work with therapy, we get smoothies. They are both much more attentive to therapy.

@brownie: thanks for your advice. He's still too little for a chart but that's a great idea for later. You are right they definitely learn even when they don't cooperate! ;)

We had this happen when my son was 2 going on 3 and at various times this past year (he is 4 now). We bribed like crazy, punished, and did charts. Ultimately most of it was just waiting it out. Our therapist works really hard to keep things fun and sometimes he still doesn't do it. Stick it out they learn even when they aren't participating.

I agree with the special treat - I would bribe him like crazy, to create positive associations! Either something sweet, or some screentime before and/or afterward.

@Mrs Green Grass: i will try taking one of his special toys and the treat is a good idea too. i mentioned to her today that i think he thinks of speech like going to the doctor-and he's really not a fan of doctor's offices just now!

Take a special object with you...lovey, blanket. Always give him a special treat there... Also talk to the therapist about it.

LO has a weekly speech therapy appointment out of the home. Recently he has started pointing to the door and my purse and making it clear that he does not want to be there. :bummed: I'm not sure how to encourage him to feel more comfortable. Any ideas?
