My son is milk and soy protein intolerant and is breastfed. He is now 13 months old and we are still breastfeeding. It's been a long year. It is fantastic that you have caught it early, it took us 6 months to catch it and 3 more months to get it all under control.

http://www.intolerantoffspring.com is a great recipe site. I just found a great recipe for hummus quesadillas which was delicious. I like hummus on bagels (albertsons bagels have no dairy or soy). I survive on lots of protein. We also go to whole foods were I can get coconut and rice yogurt, loads of dairy free quick foods and daiya dairy free cheese. Daiya is expensive but very tasty.

My sons gastro wants us to try dairy and I have found that I like a lot of my replacements way better than the dairy. I used to get a cheese free pizza and it was way better without the cheese.

I miss some ice cream and the convenience of not having to check everything. But having a baby who isn't high maintenance is totally worth it.

Good luck! You can do it and it is totally worth it. Feel free to complain to me. It is a tough life and sometimes it seems really lonely. I know I didn't have much support while going through it.

@mediagirl: For sure! I had to omit ALL dairy from my diet when I was a teen b/c lo and behold I'm allergic to dairy protein & had protein deposits in a knee injury... I REALLY couldn't eat anything then. lol

I only know about the dairy/soy stuff b/c I've pretty much lived on kellymom.com since starting to ebf. =)

@runsyellowlites: interesting! Not a mom yet so don't know much about kids allergies. Glad you knew about the soy allergy! And awesome that you only need to look out for the big dairy items! That is huge!

@Mrs. Jacks: OMGosh that would be SO amazing! I've never been to good at thinking of things to cook and recipes anyways so now that I'm restricted I'm having even more trouble... especially with always wanting MILK! lol

@runsyellowlites: I was just going to encourage you to stay away from soy too :) Over 50% of kids are cross reactive, so very smart of you to avoid!

I'll have to dig out all my resources, but I have recipes, website links, etc... Guess I have to go back to WB to dig them out!

Thanks ladies! I think that since I've been dying for a glass of milk and some cheese for 4 weeks now I've just been unable to see all my options. lol I do certainly miss all my mexican food though =(

@mediagirl: Thankfully DD's allergy is only a slight one so omitting all "obvious" dairy has been enough! phew! I was told that many times lo's with a dairy protein allergy also react to soy protein so I've stayed away from soy milk out of fear.... DD is already a temperamental baby so I don't want to risk a day of that making things worse. =/

I do know one thing for sure... we'll be eating ALOT healthier now that I have to be more mindful of what I'm eating =)

I think everyone made great suggestions already. I would say you should research hidden dairy items. For example, almost evey bread on he shelf has dairy in it. Lunchmeat can be contaminated wih dairy when sliced. Bakery and artisan breads usually don't have dairy in them.

Pasta salads are great. Mayo based items saved me when I was off dairy. Oh and soy chocolate milk? Delicious! :-)

I had a friend that had this problem. I think she ate some pasta?!? Or maybe she didn't because when she weaned her son, she had her favorite meal which was bacon ranch chicken pasta.

It shouldn't be too bad to do in summer with all the fresh veggies and fruits available. Grilled meat and a couple types of veggies. Whole grain based salads (farro, brown rice, quinoa), or bean salads, or greens salads with fruits/nuts/avocados/etc. Pasta with red sauce (marinara or spicy). Fried rice. Stir-fry.

Definitely try more Asian foods! Season with spices and/or soy sauce instead of cheese. DH went without dairy for YEARS, it's very do-able. :)

I should definitely finish my MSPI post! I had to do no soy, no dairy, no sesame, no egg, and some other things I can't remember for a long time.

I ate a lot of avocado, pork, I found some interesting dairy free recipes during my time away from it.

Dh cant eat dairy so I'm pretty used to it too. I make a lot of chicken dishes and we usually eat it with rice and veggies. Also meatball subs with no cheese, chicken burgers, pasta with red sauce.

What kind of things do you normally eat? I usually can make whatever food I want and just omit the cheese.

I did no wheat or dairy for a month and am still off dairy (LO has eczema).

Think asian food? Lots of stir fries and such. I also do lots of meat and veggie meals. BBQ.

I miss cheese so very much!

So DD has a dairy protein allergy and since removing all obvious dairy from my diet (4 weeks) things have gotten alot better, BUT I have NO CLUE what to make for dinner! I've basically been snacking on small things, pb&j and sandwiches because so many of the things I used to make had SOME KIND OF cheese or something in it.

Any other moms have to omit dairy from their diets, what did you eat?
