@rubies - We gave him about an ounce of juice diluted at least half and half. We decided to not confuse him with the bottle and got the Tommy Tippee Explora sippee for 4 months old. I would just buy the gerber pear juice in the 4 pack so I could take them with me.

If you subscribe to the montessori method they have you start giving your little one a teaspoon of juice at between 3 and 4 months old. You could try that too (especially if you don't want to dilute the juice).

my LO went 7 days without pooping! I've researched and discussed this with my dr. prior to it happening to I was waiting it out. When the 7th day rolled around I decided to call the pediatrician. I was dialing the number when I glanced over at her and there was poop everywhere! They can go several days without pooping if they are only on breastmilk, and as long as they have soft poop its ok. If they are pooping pebbles its constipation.

You could ask your dr. They might give you a suppository. You could also try prune juice. Its not the best, but will get your LO going! Just put like an ounce in a bottle.

@brownie: How much of the juice do you give h im? Through a bottle? Fresh juice? Sorry, I'm totally clueless - I've never heard of this for a baby under 6months!

We started pear juice at 3.5 months because he didn't have bowel movements. My poor LO was so screwed up that his food would either run right through him (bright green) OR stay forever and be dark brown (nice and runny though). The juice definately helps. This was also the time I stopped eating soy (I had been off dairy since he was 1 week old.)

After 3.5 days, she pooped! I was so relieved!

Those of you who suggested prune juice, do you mean for even to a baby that is as young as my LO? 3.5 months?

LO once went like 4 days and I called the pediatrician and the nurse told me breastfed babies can go THIRTEEN DAYS without pooping and be fine.
If I went thirteen days without pooping I think I would explode.

Mavrick went up to 5 days without pooping and the doc said it wasn't an issue. I think after 7 days then it might be time to ask for alternatives.

I would give prune juice or prune puree and that would "help"

This was a strange concept for me too. My doctor has always said, "do not be concerned if you're baby starts going only once or twice a week". I would of thought she was dehydrated or constipated but breastfed babies aren't as regular. Go figure.

Look up massages you can do to their belly to try to help move things along. Also I have heard using a rectal thermometer can do magic.

As long as you're getting wet diapers and squishy poops (not hard balls - that means constipation) then you're totally good. My DD went 3 days between poops, and even then it was maybe 1-2 a day. Since we've started supplementing with formula we get at least one a day now. The wet diapers mean she's staying hydrated, and the squishy poops mean there's no constipation. Basically your LO is just using all the breast milk effectively. I mean, that's why it's a superfood, because the body can process so much of it with so little waste!

charlie went 11 days once! i took him to the pediatrician who stuck a finger up charlie's bunghole and a little poop came out. the ped told us to put some pear or prune juice mixed with milk in his bottle. he eventually pooped on his own and went back to his regular 1 poop a day schedule.

Exactly what sandsandmore said. If their bodies are absorbing everything there is nothing left to poop. Liv will go the occasional 3-4 days without. As long as she isn't straining and doesn't have hard pellet poop when she does go, it's not constipation :)

My son would sometimes go a week without a poop. His body was absorbing everything, leaving nothing left to poop.

My pedi said it's normal for bf babies. She did say if it lasts over a week she usually sends for an u/s to make sure the intestines aren't backed up. I wouldn't be too concerned at this point. But contact your pedi if you are. It never hurts and that's what they are there for :-)

My LO doesn't poop everyday, usually every 2-3 days. Her pedi said it was normal because breast milk is the perfect food for babies. They process it so well there's nothing left to come out.

Here's to hoping for the epic poop soon!

Weird. My LO's been pooping little pea sized nuggets for the past 8 days. She didn't poop today. :(

I drank prune juice, gave my LO some prune juice, massaged her belly, did the bicycle thing.
Hoping -- praying for a big explosion tomorrow. Otherwise I'm taking her to the pediatrician.

Hope little BR poops soon!

My LO has some constipation issues, she's gone 3 days. We've given her (all with doctor's ok) prune juice, pear juice, and pedialyte. Also I do some leg exercises, lift her legs up to her chest and make them ride like a bike.

When LO was 1-2 months old, she pooped 4-5 times a day. From 2-3.5 months of age, she would poop one GIANT mess of a poop every morning and then *maybe* one more in the afternoon. But she last pooped 2 mornings ago.

I've been reading that for breastfed babies, this is okay. But is it?

How long does your LO go without pooping?

P.S. - 6-7 wet diapers/day. Doesn't seem uncomfortable. Eating normally.
