I wanted to add to my response...

When P was ready she took to it right away, before that she wasn't into it.... I'm sure if we would've kept it up she would've caught on but I figured it like most milestones, that when she was ready she'd get it.

Kellymom has some great info on solids & baby nutrition! :)

It definitely took a few weeks of trying before my lo was interested at all. I tried to make it as fun as possible and made sure she wasn't tired. I noticed a big correlation at the beginning between her interest in the food and how tired she was. Hope it gets better soon!

My lo didn't hate solids, but she didn't get how to swallow for a couple of weeks so it just took her awhile to get the hang of eating.

We are almost eight months and I posted something very similar two months ago! I kept offering solids, almost most days, and she's finally starting to like SOME things. But no purées or cereal -- she still hates those! She doesnt let anyone feed her. I just sit her in her high chair and put some soft food out and she eats if she wants. Out of the many many things I have offered, she has liked shredded chicken, nectarine, apricot and fig. And I made a tapioca- banana thing and she sort of likes that too.

My son ate everything happily so this girl's 'tude was a big shock to me LOL.

Refusing solids can be a sign of food allergies so I decided not to force things. But so far no bad reactions!

Don't give up! Our LO was the same way but we just kept trying different things. At 8 months she actually enjoys her food now, occasionally she'll pull out the yucky face, but not often!
Keep up, you're doing a great job!

we started at 6 months, but she really had no interest in it at all. she'd spit it out, gag, make faces. so we took it easy, just fed her as much as she would eat (which was almost nothing). then a few weeks later, she was much more interested and would stare at us intently when we were eating. she seemed more interested when we would let her suck on normal foods (i.e. not purees). at 7.5 months, she loves eating now. we do mostly purees as she hasn't mastered the pincer grasp yet and hasn't really made the connection between food in hand to mouth.

P wasn't ready for solids until after 9 months & really most babies are ready sometime between 6-8 so you're still on the early side. I'd give it a break & revisit it later when she starts prompting that she wants some. :)

Aw, poor J. Have you tried adding breast milk to her purees? We always have most luck with that, A isn't a fan of pureed pear for example, but blend it with breastmilk and it's the best :). I agree you want meal times to be fun, though, and if she is crying then personally I would give her a break for a bit. How old is she? I feel like she's about 6 months?? If so, you have time on your side so can easily try agsin in a bit.

Awe that stinks if she seems upset by even the idea of solids! Are you comfortable giving her a stick of pear or sweet potato? I've been surprised how much my LO is ambivalent about the whole thing but am secretly a little glad after everyone went on and on about how much he'd surely love "real food"

we haven't started solids yet with LO (he's 4.5 months), but i was just talking to my friend who said that if she had to do it again she wouldn't have pushed the solids when her first LO (who is now 5) resisted so much at the beginning. with her second, she waited until much later and started purees only when daycare "mandated" it because he was leaving the infant room--he took purees for 2 weeks before moving to solids, and she said the whole process was much easier.

so while i don't have personal experience, i think if it's that stressful for you both, i think it's okay to wait and revisit later. just letting her play with the food might be enough for now, so she can get used to it.

Aww, maybe try combining foods, perhaps she doesn't like too much of a single flavor? Maybe give her the spoon and empty bowl to play with or a toy to play with in the high chair so she doesn't have bad feelings towards either?

I didn't go through this, so I don't have much else to offer you.

Yeah, I just feel bad that now she's getting upset when I put her in the high chair and crying/screaming when she sees me coming with food. I don't want to make it aversive.

DS did that yuck face for a while- I pushed it anyway, and now he's a food hound. Also, I have some spectacular pictures of him making that hilarious face now!

The yuck faces are totally normal and inevitable. They do that for a while. I think they have to try something like 10-15 times before they actually like or don't like it. Doesn't mean she doesn't like solids.

The yuck faces are sure cute and funny though.

My LO is young... only 6 months. I know solids at this age are supposed to be just for fun... but I'm surprised how much my LO hates them!!!

So far they are not fun for her at all. This week I tried rice cereal, sweet potato, and banana (all pureed). I've tried feeding her and letting her feed herself with a loaded spoon. The first try or two she made "yuck" faces but seemed to enjoy playing - putting the spoon in her mouth, touching the food, etc. I decided to keep trying every day. Now she makes yuck faces and gags, even though she's not actually taking anything in. Today she saw me walking towards her with food and started crying. :( I 'm planning to quit trying and will revisit this in another 1-2 weeks... I want it to be fun and she just doesn't seem to enjoy it. Her daycare is pushing solids like crazy, but I guess I'm just going to have to tell them she's not ready yet.

If your LO hated solids at first, did you keep trying or did you take a break for awhile?
