THANK YOU for the feedback! DH changed him last night and he stayed relatively calm. This morning I nursed first (as opposed to using nursing to calm him after) and he was happy as a clam!

Hopefully the trend continues...seems like it tapered off around 6 weeks for most of you.

DD did the same thing as a newborn, that is stressful! But, she outgrew by around 6 weeks I'd say, and now loves diaper changes!

We had that issue too but once we switched nappy changes to post feed instead of before a feed, she was much better about it. We also hung a musical mobile above the change table and that instantly became a great distraction! Also, as someone else mentioned, we use the time for some up close face to face interaction and she loves that.

If all else fails though, know that your LO will grow out of it! It was right around the six week mark that nappy changes stopped being so traumatic.

Maybe try putting a microfiber type of blanket or a towel right before you change him. Keep it in a place where it's warm. It could be that he's cold.

@FutureMrsMcK: Willa did that for the first few weeks, until we decided to change her after the feeding instead of before. Then the changing pad became her favorite place..

@pastemoo, @Mrs. Jacks: We called her goo too! :-)

He will grow out of it. Hang in there!! My LO likes it when we sing to him. I used to tell him we are going for a diaper change and then I will start singing and it finally calmed down.

This was something my mom told me was to make the changing table a happy place and spend lots of non diaper time there. It's a great place where at an early age they are close to your face and can see you but also stretch out. Maybe try to spend some time on the table making it a happy place.

DS grew out of it... part of it was because we switched diaper changes from before feeding to after.... I did not add any toys or mobiles. I do sing and say stuff like "Guess who loves diaper time? You love diaper time little goo. Diaper time is your favorite time!"
He now loves diaper time.

Also... we let him "air dry" a bit during the change and sing to him them. He LOVES that. I think he used to hate being cold... and now he weighs more and can tolerate being (half) naked much better.

@winniebee:/@MamaBehr: Here's hoping he grows out of it...and soon. It doesn't bother me SO MUCH* during the day, but we live in an apartment, and our walls aren't super thick or anything, and I cringe to think that our neighbors might be constantly woken up during his 2am diaper change...

@Mrs. Jacks: No rash. He has no interest in toys yet...even the ones we just shake in front of him. He squeezes his eyes shut and gets progressively louder until we're done...completely oblivious to everything.

@highwire: That's a possibility, especially when I change him in bed at night (yeah, I'm THAT parent...). I like our bedroom on the cooler side because of my night sweats. LO often seems warm to the touch at night, but he's almost always at least in a onesie. I'll try socks next changing.

*I lie, it bothers me a ton, just slightly less during the day.

My son did the same thing and he grew out of it eventually. He still has some diaper changes where he freaks out, but not as bad as when he was a newborn. I didn't do anything about it though, I just go as fast as I can.

Surrounding our changing table, we have a hanging bee, black and white art cards and a few animals. We usually try to hand M. a toy before we start the change (this avoids hand in poop!) and push the bee so it flies around.

By making the changing table so interesting, we've actually found it's a calming place rather than a frantic place and we've been known to lay M. down on it to calm her down when nothing else works.

I don't know if that will help for you. Has your babe had a diaper rash that has allowed an association with pain?

So, as the title implies, my LO is almost always hysterical during diaper changes....like 9/10 times. DH and I have (separately) tried talking to him, singing to him, propping him up into a slight incline, shaking toys near his head...he just scrunches up his face and screams bloody murder, and then as soon as we're done and pick him up he calms.

Has anyone else had this problem? How did you fix it? Did your LO eventually grow out of it? (DS is about 5 weeks old...)
