@Foodnerd81: also how ds is when he has fluid. Hard to understand and can't hear well. He never developed an infection even with all the fluid he had back in march.

I think he would have had tubes required if he was sick more often. But I SAH and I think avoiding day care germs prevented colds, there by preventing ear infections. Every cold for the first couple years of life resulted in an ear infection, but luckily he didn't have many. He seems to be growing out of that, fingers crossed.

Also her speech hasn't been as clear as usual lately- like she's mumbled a bit more or it's a little garbled. So I guess that's another reason I should go...

@Truth Bombs: no, the ENT recommended we wait and see if she got another bad ear infection quickly or was outgrowing it, and her ear infections decreased dramatically at that point, so we didn't get the tubes. She still does get them but like several times a year, not once a month. I guarantee she doesn't have one now, but who knows about tomorrow...
I guess I'll touch base with the pediatrician. At least I could probably get their flu shots f we have Togo in.

I would. I had chronic ear infections as a kid and had slight hearing loss until I had my tonsils and adenoids removed when I was 4. My hearing was fully restored. It can't hurt to see the pediatrician or ENT.

@Foodnerd81: so does she have tubes? If so, any fluid should be draining, not trapped. If she doesn't have tubes, I would assume this is from fluid in the ear and I would still take her in to be seen. If fluid is getting trapped in her ear it's basically just a matter of time until its infected again so it's probably worth another chat with the ENT.

My son had this bad in march. Lots of fluid after a cold. I think he would have benefited from tubes tbh but hopefully he's growing out of this ear drama!

can you call the ENT and ask their opinion? I think fluid can hang around a long time without treatment so it might be worth going in, but I'm not sure.

@Anagram: yeah it sounds just like that- fluid, not an infection. I find myself getting so annoying repeating myself extra since she didn't hear- since I also have to repeat myself a ton because she is 4 and CHOOSES not to listen anyway. How long did you wait before treating it?

@Foodnerd81: could be fluid in the ear? I had some after a bad cold last winter and it just wouldn't go away.....I had it for like 6 weeks. It just made my hearing on the side muffled and it was hard to sleep on my side because the pressure would build up in my ear. Eventually, my doctor put me on a round of steroids to dry up the fluid.

My 4 yo has had a cold off and on for a couple weeks- nothing major, but she's definitely still congested. She also has a history of ear infections but hasn't had one for a while. About a week ago she said her ears hurt, but they seemed tonget better on their own. She's also said that when she yawns things get louder (like when her ears pop). All makes sense with a head cold.

But now she just seems to not be hearing as well. Always saying "what?!" Really loudly, asking us to turn up the volume. She definitely still hears but seems to be not like normal. Her hearing was checked last summer when we had an ENT consult for tubes and was fine then.

Normal reaction to a head cold, or when would you call the doctor?
