You could start with the difficult side, switch to the side he prefers when he fusses, and then go back to that difficult side after he seems more full/happy.

I've heard to actually give them the side they prefer first when they are hungry and then once they are settled and calm try the other side

My LO preferred the left side for the first month on two. It got so frustrating and painful. At night I would give into whatever he wanted so I could go back to sleep, but during the day I always started with the right side so he would eventually give in when he was hungry enough.

@creativemomma15: you could also try nursing laying down. (and if you end up not bottle feeding, i'd pump anyway and freeze)

I would suggest trying all these things, and then just giving in. Your supply ought to adjust to uneven feedings. You may need to stuff your bra, but you shouldn't have a problem making enough milk. I've ended up feeding more on one side for various reasons, and it's never been an issue.

@pastemoo: I was considering trying block feeding... I have just always fed LO from both sides :)

@bebefly: I thought about pumping and bottle feeding, I am just afraid I will end up having to exclusively pump then. DS is very nosy and can get distracted really easily nursing already and I am a little nervous that if I start bottle feeding more that he will only want that. I might have to try that tomorrow though. I have been nursing in the cradle hold. Tonight I tried the cradle hold on the left and football on the right and that went a little better. I was wondering if his ear has been bothering him because he started pulling on it the other day but he doesn't have any other symptoms... Maybe that could be why he did better laying on his right side?

@creativemomma15: I had to block feed. (Same side for a couple feedings, then switch after a set amount of time). Each breast is slightly different so it may be easier to nurse on one side. My clinic told me this was normal--now at 6 months old he does well on both sides.

Over the past few days my DS has been really finicky with nursing. He fusses on my R side and then when we switch to the L he is content and nurses well. Nursing sessions have been getting more stressful and I try to get him to start on the side he doesn't prefer hoping that since he is really hungry he will empty me. It hasn't exactly been working well and I am not sure what to do. Most of the day today I could tell that he never really emptied my R side and he was really fussy for his bedtime nursing session.

Has anyone else had any experience with this? Any tips on how to encourage nursing on both sides again or keeping up supply?
