sounds like a sleep regression. Your LO sounds similar to mine in that once she gets accustomed to being held/rocked back to sleep, it's not just that one time ... it's the need to be held/rocked ALL THE TIME. My LO has sleep regressions here and there and while I'll always go in when I know she's sick ... I've stopped going in when she has these crying fits at night. It's because the first few nights it will only take 5-10 minutes to soothe her and put her back to sleep. Then it will start taking longer and longer because she realizes you're putting back to the crib so she takes longer to fall asleep because she's paranoid you're going to put her back in the crib. Then it's more than once a night. And I feel like the longer I enable this behavior, the harder it is to retrain her to stop. So now, unless it's REALLY warranted, I don't go in. Popping my head to tell her to go back to sleep makes it worse, because she's seen mommy and now she's hell bent on having me come in. So it's cold turkey or nothing. Sounds kinda mean, but it's the only way we ALL get sleep. It takes generally a week if I'm pretty strict about not going in .... 2 weeks or so if I've succumbed to her behavior and went in a few times to soothe her.

The way I see it, you have two choices: let her CIO and she will probably modify her behavior quickly, or continue to try to sooth her, etc and hope things get better. Our LO just went through a stage of waking at 5 am. I tried everything and this went on for at least 6 weeks. Nothing worked. Finally I told my DH we would have to let her CIO until 6. It wasn't perfect but she started sleeping until 6 within 3 days. Good luck!

@emg86: It will be hard, but 3 nights of hard is worth, a household getting the sleep they need. Especially since you have another one coming soon. When are you due?

@emg86: hmm, that is strange! She def sounds like she is getting enough sleep during the day! If it's not teeth and she's not sick or anything, which it sounds like she isnt...I would do what @Smurfette suggested and try and let her work it out on her own, if nothing else is working and everyone is exhausted. As far as the stressful events you mentioned, babies do pick up on stress and what not, but I can't imagine that it would be what is making her wake up every night around the same time- esp if her daily routine is all still the same....

A has been doing this, I just assumed it was teething. I couldn't figure it out but then I gave her Motrin and she went back to sleep. It really is so hard to tell :/

@Smurfette: That's what my husband thinks needs to happen as well. Breaks my heart, but I'm afraid this is a weird thing she's picked up now and it will get worse if we don't stop it.

That sounds really rough. I don't know what could be going on.

If you know that she is ok, I might just try and let her scream. And give it a couple nights and see if it gets better.

@emg86: that sounds so tough! Hmmm...my initial reaction was night terrors, but usually they are still asleep when they have those. M has them every once and awhile, usually when she is over-tired and hot. She wakes up SCREAMING and thrashing around like crazy, but unlike your LO, she doesnt calm down when we talk or hold her. We just have to let it pass :bummed:

Is she getting enough rest during the day? How many naps is your LO on and how long? My LO will wake up screaming and crying like that at night if she skips a nap or takes too short of a nap. Besides teething, those are really the only things I can think of!

Someone please help me figure out my LO's sleep issue before I lose my mind. I'm not sure if this is regression, teething, stress, nightmares or what...but I can't figure it out.

J is 13.5mos old and has been sleeping in her room since about 6.5mos or so. She dropped her early morning nursing session shortly after she moved into her room and usually sleeps all night long unless she randomly poops or has a tooth breaking through--Tylenol or teething tablets usually do the trick. About a month ago or so, she started waking up between 1230-230ish. We immediately rushed in there thinking it was teething/growth spurt/poop/hunger...but she would get so upset and just lay her head on my shoulder or husband and go right back to sleep. I figured maybe she was having bad dreams. It was a quick wake up and she'd go right back down. A few days later it became more often and now it's every single night. It's not teething (no swollen gums, extra drool, etc), she never wants milk or water, her diaper is always fine and she wakes up ANGRY...like she's throwing a horrible tantrum. The last few weeks we've tried letting her fuss but now she stands and jumps and I have to watch her on the monitor cause I'm afraid she will bang her face/head on the crib railings. My husband usually goes first and can get her back down but 2 minutes after she realizes she's in her crib, the cycle starts all over again and she becomes even more upset. I break down and go in and she immediately lays her head on my shoulder and I rock her. I will rock her forever and slowly put her back down and can't even make it out of her room before she wakes up again screaming her face off. I am so tired and so is my husband. We've had a lot of stressful events in our life over the last month and a half and I'm wondering if she's sensing that? Last night after trying to put her down for over an hour between the two of us, we told her we loved her and walked out. She screamed and jumped in her crib for about 45 minutes before laying down. There are hardly any tears involved in this whole process...it's all screaming. Any ideas/suggestions/tips?
