We are struggling with this too. I wish we had actually started sooner. We have the Bjorn with the insert and its not bad. She likes the insert on the big potty though.

@MamaCate: we have a DVD but there are also books that I've seen. I think YouTube also has clips; The Elmo videos are less instructional and more to make it fun and non-intimidating for LOs.

In my opinion you can't go wrong with Baby Bjorn. Their simplest model is the best, in my personal opinion-- no parts to lose, no frills, small and unassuming enough to be un-intimidating, and can be carried and emptied by the child: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000UZVGAI/ref=as_li_qf_sp_asin_il_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=B000UZVGAI&linkCode=as2&tag=10302012-20 Their other potty with a removable insert is Mr. T's favorite as the insert can make cleaning easier, but I don't prefer it because the insert has a way of making its way around the house and has to be taken back and put in the potty before the potty can be used for its correct function: http://www.amazon.com/BabyBj%C3%B6rn-055115US-BABYBJORN-Potty-Chair/dp/B000056J7L/ref=pd_cp_ba_1 And they also have this nice one that fits over the adult toilet seat: http://www.amazon.com/BABYBJORN-Toilet-Trainer-White-Black/dp/B0009PAN7Q/ref=sr_1_2?s=baby-products&ie=UTF8&qid=1375326252&sr=1-2&keywords=potty+seat. This one has actually turned out to be Lorelei's favorite (Ellie was scared of the big potty for a long time, even after being in underwear full-time for several months). She likes to sit where big people sit.

@MamaCate: My DS (22 mo) is telling me when he poops too. We put out the little potty, but he doesn't like sitting in it at all so I haven't been forcing it. @Mrs. Twine: thanks for the reminder that I need to get my potty books/DVD's out. The Elmo Potty episode has a really fun song that my DD really liked for potty time.

Now would be a great time to introduce a potty! Read some books about potty learning, let her watch you or DH on the potty (as long as you are comfortable) and talk to her about how when people get older they stop using diapers and use a toilet (use whatever language you feel comfortable with, keeping in mind that the words you use will be repeated). Let her try sitting on the potty. But don't push. Kids will learn to use the potty, barring medical circumstances that wouldn't allow them to. So the main thing is just to provide opportunities and not get in the way of the process. Good luck, and have fun!

LO is almost 20 months and the last two weeks has begun to come track down DH or I to say "poop" and point to her diaper. So yay her!

But I am not sure what we do now. Get her a potty? Practice sitting on it? Or wait until she can tell us beforehand?
