LO is 5 months old and during the entire 4th month we had a huge issue with sleep regression. He was up every 3 hours (at least) every night. Although I highly doubt that he was hungry during each wake-up, I do generally nurse him back to sleep. This is mostly for DH and I to max our sleep at night - because if we try to rock to sleep or soothe in any other way it takes a lonnnng time.
LO is also teething right now, so his sleep is even worse than it would usually be. Generally 4am is when his sleep becomes the most fitful, and I usually need to nurse him around that time if I want him to fall back to sleep at all.

@eeh: ok that's a good idea. I had been going in and trying to give her a paci, but she wouldn't accept it without a 20 minute fight...and at 4am, that's exhausting. I'll see if my hubby wouldn't mind getting up and helping out.

I would try settling her without feeding and see if she'll buy it. If possible, have your partner go in and try settling if you're breastfeeding. That helped with us because if I walked in she could sense that food was near and wouldn't calm down without being fed but if my husband went it he could sway with her or rock her or just give her the pacifier and she'd go back to sleep. Now that we broke the habit of wanting to eat I can go in and settle her.

I'm trying to figure out when LO (who is 4 months), wakes up in the middle of the night, is she hungry, or waking up just to wake up. Obviously, if she wakes up 4-6 hours after she last ate, she is probably hungry. It's when she wakes up 2-3 hours that it's so hard to tell. Anyone know how to tell, or how often a 4 month old realistically needs to eat at night?
