I avoid character stuff for this reason, she doesn't get attached (yet) to stripes and polka dot clothing! I now if she had Sofia or Doc McStuffin's PJs we would have meltdowns...similar to if someone tries to use her coloring book know :S

@Bao: I can only speak for my son, but I'd approach it one of two ways...sometimes, I choose the path of least resistance and I would go and buy multiples of the item and just let him wear it all the time. Other times, I can't do that for whatever reason and I have to remove all opportunity for him to resist.

In this case, I'd probably just say "It is time to get dressed. Here is your new shirt." If she resists, I might give a choice between two other shirts.

@Bao: My DD has been this way lately with her nightgowns - all of them - she loves them and does NOT want to get dressed!

I tell her "we don't wear pjs to school" and then tell her she can take off or nightgown or I can.

There are tears involved but what can you do???

If you are ok with her wearing it all the time just buy a few more so she always has a clean one.

@looch: hmm I just say "let's take off your shirt, mommy will wash it and you can wear it again another time" then she freaks.

@T-Mom: what is it about those pajamas?!?!?! I am only buying one style/print from now on, in multiples! I have learned my lesson trying to mix it up.

@mrs. wagon: Doesn't have to be character clothing, my son will do this with random pairs of pajamas from Carters!

@Bao: Are you asking her to take the shirt off, or are you telling her to take the shirt off? When you give them a choice, sometimes they take advantage and will say no, just because they can. I'd eliminate the "ask" and institue a task that has to be completed, with consequences if not completed.

I'm glad I'm not the only one with a child who is obsessed with certain pieces of clothing!

My son LOVES anything green and he begs to wear a green shirt and/or green pants everyday. He's at the point now where he understands that he can't wear something if it's dirty. I'll usually talk about what's on his clothing that has made it dirty and he knows anything in his hamper is 'wet' or 'dirty' and off-limits. Then I'll pull out other shirts/pants and give him an option between 2 or 3 items.

It's a lot of negotiating and explaining. :/

@Bao: This is EXACTLY why I avoid character clothing. We have a few for Wagon Jr. (Avengers, Captain America, Superman) and he always wants to wear them. But luckily he's easygoing and likes a variety so when I explain that one isn't available, and he can wear the other, he's ok with it.

BUT I will not be buying any Frozen or My Little Pony attire for LMW because she will not be as easy to convince. I know she'd love it but she would never allow us to take it off of her for whatever reason.

If I were you I'd take her to the store and let her choose another shirt so you can rotate and wash!

My guy gets upset when we try to take off his jammie shirt and always begs for this other t-shirt, too. I wait until it's absolutely necessary (and tell him it's going to happen soon), and then just take it off him. I talk to him nicely and explain why and when he'll get to wear it again, and yes it makes him sad to take it off, etc. Then I just weather the storm (for him it's not too long). After doing this a few times, it's been less of a tantrum.

We have a couple of dresses that she gets attached to, or decides she wants to wear and she will go through every room/hamper looking for it when we tell her its in the wash. We've just had to deal with the melt downs and wash it.

A has an obsession with Elmo and we bought her a 3t (so it's big), Elmo shirt so that she could wear it to bed. She refuses to take it off. I don't care that she wears it but I have to wash it eventually. Has anyone been through this? How do I handle it? Did it last long? Any advice would be helpful, she turns into a flailing monster when I even ask nicely if we can please take it off.
