The move to cows milk, specifically whole milk, is for the fat content for development. My son is allergic to milk and still breastfeeds but I make lowest milk. We supplement with specialty drinks. I don't think you have to move them to anything if there isn't a weight issue and you are still breastfeeding. We are breastfeeding till 2 because of that.

I wouldn't do the sugar for all the reasons you suggested. You could do fruit smoothies and keep removing the fruit. You could continue to try introducing it. You could also try a different Sippy cup just for milk.

@Rubies: interestingly, I heard goat's milk is a better choice than cow's milk too. I have had it before... It tastes like goat cheese, but in milk form. So, it has an aftertaste... that's pleasing for some, I'm sure, but not everyone. I haven't tried giving it to LO yet. Going to do more research and wait til she is over 12 months anyway. Please post if you hear anything more about it!

@sweetandtart: my first LO refused cow's milk for several months when we switched from bottle to sippy... I snuck in calcium other ways through cheese, yogurt, fortified OJ (diluted with water to control sugar amount though) and calcium supplements for a few months. Then I intro'ed chocolate milk when she was close to 2 yo and she was drinking milk again. I've since been diluting her chocolate milk with plain milk to control the sugar amount too... So sometimes she'll be drinking 3/4 milk to 1/4 chocolate milk which I think outweighs the benefits for her specifically. That's because she started to get picky with yogurt and cheese, so I wanted her to drink more milk again. Anyway, we do our best as parents of picky eaters and I know it's hard, but try not to stress too much. It does sound like your LO is fine, but I guess if you want to wean soon, just keep trying to offer milk/calcium to her however you think is best.

@sweetandtart: In lots of cultures kids don't drink much milk. I freaked out at first about it, but now I'm pretty comfortable with her dairy intake... Cheese and yogurt and smoothies!

@Mrs. Jacks --Thanks! I read your comment on the blog post. I think I was just worried that she was missing something that she needed for her physical development. She gets her calcium in other ways, just not milk from a cup! I'm definitely going to try smoothies soon.

Lala drinks ZERO cow's milk. I wrote in the comments to today's blog post about how I sneak milk and dairy into her diet.

Interesting - I'm sort of in the same-ish boat. LO is almost 11 months old and only BFs twice a day (wake up and bedtime). She is allergic to milk so is supposed to drink soy formula but absolutely hates it. I think she'd rather starve than drink soy formula...So now I'm wondering if I should try soy milk - I'm sure it has to taste a little different...? Someone actually suggested goat's milk to me but haven't tried it.

My LO is 15 months and still BFing 3-4 times a day. She will drink water from a sippy cup all day long, but she refuses to drink cow's milk. She loves yogurt and cheese and eats both daily, so she is getting some dairy.

We have a new pediatrician that we saw today and she suggested giving her chocolate milk or strawberry milk. But it seems crazy to me to give her something with so much sugar.

So I'm wondering how important it is that she drink cow's milk at this point and if I should substitute with something else like chocolate milk or soy milk. I'm kind of stressing right now!
