@blackbird: I feel your pain! I hope getting the tongue tie clipped fixes it for you. My LO did soooo much better with his latch after that. He used to be super fussy at the breast but now he loves it. I just wish I had more milk to give him.

@blackbird: The nipple shield didn't work for us either. :( It's so frustrating!

@PawPrints: @.twist.: thanks! I feel hopeful about this afternoon then! We were using a shield for a bit but I feel like it hurt more because he wasn't getting a deep latch, so I weaned him off it when we got home

I would think the tongue tie clip would help a lot
We had some struggle like yours but it was from engorgement and flat nipples, so the shield worked like a charm for us. Good luck.

@blackbird: Are you doing everything you can to make him really awake? When my LO was a newborn we had to turn all the lights on, strip her naked, and hold a cold wash cloth against her feet to get her to wake up enough to nurse during the night! That would be my only suggestion.

@Bubbles: thanks! I'm really hoping the clip helps...!

@YouGotMe: no, we are going 5 hour intervals at night now, per the ped. Waking him to eat every 2-3 hours was a bust so she said let him sleep since he eats a lot during the day. I was up half the night fighting him. I'm actually not engorged at all-everything is plenty squishy for him to eat!

@turkeylurkey: we've tried that with a pacifier-it works great during the day. Sometimes I can get him to latch and take a few sucks at night, but he just pulls off and tosses around. The on and off 100 times is killing me!

@Cole: you can't even squeeze a bottle nipple in his mouth when he's asleep lol.

Maybe this kid is just a heavy sleeper, doesn't like being screwed with, and wants to be a middle child :silly: but still. Driving me crazy!

With my daughter I could sometimes rock or bounce her to sleep and then before she was sound sleep she was easier to latch on.

Congratulations!

@blackbird: with DS I would trick him. Started with the bottle just to get him calm. Then switch to breast. I also used the shield which helped.

Are you feeding at the same frequency overnight and does he also have problems for the first feeding of the day?

When I was engorged even a slight amount my LO couldn't latch very well.

She also was tongue tied and lip tied but we didn't catch that until much later on.

Congrats on the birth of your little guy! I'm no expert, but I'd hang in there until the TT has been clipped and you've both had a chance to work with the LC. My DS had a tongue tie and would also refuse, arch, scream when I tried to get him to latch, even though he was clearly hungry. He was the other way around though and only did it during the day! It does take a little time after they've had it clipped for their latch to improve as they need to re learn how to use their tongue, but it's great you've caught it so early.

We've been struggling to get T to latch at night ever since we got home from the hospital. He just fights it and tosses his head back and forth no matter what I feel like I am trying. The LCs, nurses, and our pediatrician recommend we try for 10 minutes before giving him a bottle of pumped milk because it just wears him out and turns into an hour plus long battle of trying to get him on. Two nights ago, I was able to get him on and it was no big deal! I have no idea what I did differently. He is so not feeling it now. He does fine during the day. May fight it for 5-10 min but I always get him on.

Thoughts? I'm not sure what to do or what to try. This isn't sustainable long term.

We are having a tongue tie clipped later today and I'm seeing an LC tomorrow
