@erinpye: I have to agree that reading what they *should* be doing makes it even worse. It's so frustrating.

@illumina: she did sleep for another hour and a half curled up with me, which was nice, then refused to nap for hours. She finally took one good nap and I'm putting her to sleep early now, with the time change and crappy sleep. It's been another rough day.

@illumina: it sucks but it's nothing you're doing! Seriously! I agonized similarly and the only thing that helped was accepting that I couldn't do anything :) it will pass!

@Foodnerd81: I read that and tried it with no luck, I'm curious I it works for anyone IRL!

Darn. M is 3.5 weeks old and doesn't take naps during the day unless I'm holding her in my arms or the carrier. If I wait until she's asleep and then put her down in the swing, RnP, or crib she wakes up after a few minutes. I'm bummed to read the responses because it seems like M will follow suit and just not nap. *sigh* Hard to get anything done! On the positive side, at least she sleeps soundly in 3-4 hour stretches at night.

@illumina: I agree with other posters that it has little to do with us. I think J sleeps so well at night because he doesn't nap much during the day. It's a trade off. Plus he's rarely cranky. I think he just likes to be up and refreshes himself with those 15 min naps.

Ugh I'm so sorry- I know how frustrating it is. It makes it harder when you read book or hear from other parents about how long the naps "should" be at a certain age. Honestly, my DD simply wouldn't nap well unless I held her, until she was 6 months old. No swing, bouncer, or crib would do. I got into babywearing with a woven wrap and it was a HUGE help- she'd sleep or calmly look around, and I could move around and use my hands. Wovens also don't have to be retied like the Moby does when taking baby in and out (because woven wraps don't stretch), so that was great for all the diaper changes and nursing sessions. All I can say is DD at 18 months still isn't a great napper- we're lucky to get an hour, rarely 2, and she's apparently "supposed" to be taking a 3 hour nap. Once I accepted each kid is different and has different sleep needs, just like adults do, I was able to handle it a bit better. Also talking to my mom and learning I was never much of a napper either made me feel better. Hang in there and just focus on what works best for your particular baby, and don't worry about fitting any molds- sleep is so extremely tricky with little ones!

@Foodnerd81: I have no idea what time it is where you are- but I hope the rest of your night went well and she went back to sleep! Yes, I can see how NO naps are more of a problem. It's strange to me how night sleep and day sleep are so different though- like unrelated! Managed to put S down in the moses basket for a nap for the first time in a week- she slept for almost 2hrs!

@illumina: oh we were up at the same time! C went to bed late (our fault, got home late). Woke normal time or motn feeding, would fall asleep in my arms, wake up when I put her down. Dh bounced her to sleep, woke up five minutes after he put her down. Brought her into our bed and fed her, woke up half an hour later in a perfectly still warm bed with mom right there. Dh finally got her back to sleep in her crib where she slept for almost two hours. Feeding her now and acting like its motn in hopes that she goes back down. And to be clear, half hour naps weren't our problem. NO naps were :) I was jealous of their 30 minute naps!

@Cherrybee: tell me about it! We may have finally graduated into your, @foodnerd81: and @lawbee11: club! I am so proud of my S! Haha. Although it seems like all three of you, with the help of Wiessbluth are moving onto a new club now!! Last night was particularly bad... though to be fair we were good until 4:45 when she woke up for her 2nd motn feed, then she would. not. go. down. Dh ended up holding her until 7:45, then he tried to put her down as she'd fallen asleep, where she stayed for 30 MINUTES!!! and woke up! I remember you saying in a thread a while back that after E's crap nap, you'd get her up and 30mins later put her back down? Well S is literally more cranky and exhausted than before her crap nap, so I'm not sure that is going to help things :(

@marionberry: it's frustrating isn't it? we've had a week of this now. As usual I think it's something I'm doing wrong with S, so I'm going through all sorts of things and reading everything to try and get her naps back on track!

@Foodnerd81: this is what Dh suggested! He said we should go back in and rock the basket at 28mins or so! I haven't resorted to this just yet, but it may come!

I haven't tried this but just saw it on a sleep webinar I watched. Most babies have very specific sleep cycle lengths (like, ew minutes, or 41, it whatever). If you can identify exactly how long your LO's is you can go in a minute before and do whatever soothes him- reinsert the paci, a firm hand in the belly, whatever. In theory that could help transition them into the next sleepy cycle. But I have not tried it!

@Cherrybee: glad E has been. Giving you some god naps finally! C has also been doing better for the last day and a half, though now bedtimes are getting trickier.

@illumina: I'm sorry! J has been taking really shitty naps lately too and will fall asleep on me but the second I try to put him down to sleep he wakes back up. It's annoying but I figure since he sleeps so well at night I can't really complain. He does sleep well in the carrier or the car too.

Ba-hahahahaha!!!!! I'm sorry, I shouldn't laugh. I really shouldn't - but THIS IS WHAT WE HAVE BEEN DEALING WITH FOR WEEKS! Honestly!!

From what I have read - online and in my books - and gleamed from other Bees, it is really, really normal. My understanding is that some babies wake after their first sleep cycle is complete - which is generally 30 minutes. It's totally normal - they're just not developmentally ready yet to nap for longer. According to the books, they will naturally consolidate their sleep into longer naps when they are ready - and, at 14 weeks, my little Bean has just started to do that this week! She has had some epic naps this week (and some crap ones!!). All I can say in the meantime is that, for us, The Bean still needed a lot of sleep and the only way to help her get that was to get her up after her 30 minute nap (I would always try to prolong it - reinsert the dummy - and I sometimes got another 10, 20 minutes) and then put her down again as soon as she because tired. That happened 45 mins after she got up so she had about 5 naps during the day but it did work.

@scg00387: @rahlyrah: I know it's common for babies to have a 30min nap, but is it normal for them to still be tired(overtired) when they wake up? She seems more upset than before she slept :(

B is 4.5 months and his naps are still only about 30 mins. Once in a blue moon we will get a GLORIOUS hour nap (or more) but it's rare.

@illumina: We had the exact same thing happen; it's developmental. Unfortunately he stayed at that until about 4.5 months, when his awake time lengthened and his naps went to 45, and then around 5.5 months we did pick up/ put down so he fell asleep on his own and they still stayed at 45. He outgrew it around 6m when he transitioned to two naps. Not much you can do but wait it out.

@illumina: my LO went through that right around 6 weeks... It is related to the 6 week growth spurt as you thought. For some it's only a couple days, for other babies a couple weeks. fWIW, her sleep and naps did of back to her normal (she still didn't STTN) until recently at the 3 month spurt/4 month regression which has lasted almost two weeks and just now seems to be returning to normal the last two nights. Just ride it out (I know it's hard).

@beaker: until last week we were putting her down after 90mins as that was when she was starting to yawn. She went down ok so I thought the timings were ok. Now maybe that is too long? I don't know. She woke up at 7am, I fed her and she still looked tired so I didn't play with her as I did yesterday I put her straight back down and he slept for another 2.5hrs. Then I fed her and Dh took her to run errands. He was back within 90mins so we tried to put her down again. Not happening. 2hrs later we decided to go for a drive and she fell asleep within 10mins and slept for a 30min drive, hour walk, 30min drive home and 30mins in the car seat in the lounge. Even with the disturbances she slept for hours so why can't she do it at home??

LO is almost 7wks old. Ok so up until last weekend we did the pick up/put down thing and she napped in her moses basket just fine. We got to the point where we didn't need to go in and settle anymore. Then we got to 6wks and bam! we thought the 6wk growth spurt had hit and she was just going through a fussy spell and wouldn't settle well. If we've been holding her or if we keep rocking her she'll go down for almost 30mins and then wake up and can't settle again.

So a week later and we're still here. I don't think it's the growth spurt anymore, but I think it's way too early for object permanence. This feels like a massive regression. Basically she won't sleep for longer than the first sleep cycle unless she's being held, or the only exception is if we're driving, she'll sleep the whole time.

Anyone got any ideas what we can do until she gets old enough to properly sleep train??
