Agree with those who said gift it, or nothing. I want to try to think of it as if I were the one needing the money. If someone needs it, I hope I can be generous enough to help them however I can. But, I won't "loan" money.

Yep if we can't give it outright, we basically feel we can't "afford" it.

yes and it caused a huge strain in our relationship - finally I just told her "Happy birthday, your gift is you don't have to pay me back"

that was the last time I ever loaned money to a friend.

@Mrs. Lion: agree - gift it or not at all!

No one has ever approached us. But if they did, I would figure it had to be a very serious situation for them to ask. I would give it as a gift, or not at all.

Yes and he never paid it back. We're still friends but I am pretty mad about it, even years later because it was meant as a loan not a gift. We now don't loan money to anyone as a policy and we've had to turn someone else down. We sometimes pay for small things but we offer to do it before we are asked, I don't like being asked for money in the first place.

Not quite the same, but I loaned a considerable amount of money to our former cleaning lady. She did pay it back, but I would never do it again. If I'm ever approached by anyone in the future (other than maybe family), I will just honestly say that we do not loan money, period.

I would never loan money to a friend. I just know that if they didn't pay it back that I would be pretty unhappy about it and it would damage the relationship. Thankfully I've never been put in this position.

I would loan money to my siblings or parents though if they needed it for a good reason (and have before in small amounts). That wouldn't bother me for them to not pay me back. But probably only 1k or less.

@Mrs. Lion: Agree! I probably would never loan, and if I do, it has to be someone I care a lot about and I can't expect it back.

Though on the flip side if I somehow ever have to borrow money from friends I would make 1000% sure I pay them back on time!

Totally reminds me of that SATC moment when Carrie got mad at Charlotte for not offering to loan her money :silly:

A good friend of mine asked before and I loaned him the money. Then he had car trouble, and I loaned him some more. And then some more. All said and done he had ended up borrowing 2k from me and always said he'd pay me back. But I'd see him buying other stuff and not paying me back instead. Finally I put him on a payment plan and told him I wanted him to start paying it back $200/month. And he stuck with it and ended up giving it all back. We're still good friends to this day.

This only happened to me once several years ago like a year or two right after college. A friend of mine was in a car accident and he was trying to buy a house at the same time. Money was tight for him and he asked for $500. At the time he was a close friend, over time & physical distance we are not close, but I didn't hesitate to help. I think he gave me a timeframe for repayment, but nonetheless he sent me a check shortly after he closed on his house. The very next time I saw him (in town on a business trip) he showed off his new car and told me how the money helped him with the tags & registration. I was happy he paid me back because $500 was a lot of money to gift, but my parents always taught me don't lend more than you can give. I firmly believe in not letting money get in the way of friendship. If you get burned once just don't put yourself in that situation again.

I would give as a gift or not at all. I would never loan to someone I'm close to. It changes the nature of the relationship.

Has a friend ever asked to borrow money from you? What did you end up doing? Did you remain friends after it was all done?

A friend recently asked me, despite knowing I don't work, and I was caught off guard because it was a lot of money! Luckily they figured it out, but man I was torn on what to do.
