I have tried to pull it all the way out and then feed it in, but it never gets taught enough, so i make my husband stand to the side, and hold the belt from the top, where it comes out of the frame. Somehow, the restistance makes it easier to attach the clip.
But I seriously hate belt installs. And I always check to see if I can tether the seat.

We only used to clip when we were in someone else's car without the base. I agree it is a royal pita to use. It probably depends on what car seat you have but would require us to keep pulling on the seat belt and slowly moving the clip down to tighten. Once we got it positioned correctly that seat was not going anywhere. It can't hurt to get it inspected if you are able to. Good.luck.

@looch: Do you lock out the shoulder part of the seat belt (like, pull it all the way out so it locks and feed it back in)? Is the shoulder part supposed to be a little looser than the lap part, then?

I have not used the locking clip on the infant bucket, but i have used it on a convertible...i feel the same as you, it's hard to get it in the correct position, so what I found worked was for me to put the clip on one piece of the belt, clasp it, then kind of finagle the other piece of the belt into the clip.

Do you use the locking clip for your car seat or car seat base (seat belt install, not latch)? I read all the directions in our car manual and the car seat manual, and I still feel like our install isn't right. It's impossible to get the clip in the right spot, it seems like.

The other problem is, if the seat belt is really tight, the shoulder part pulls up on the base so it is crooked-- like the recline is correct, per the level indicator on the side of the seat, but from the front it's tilted.

I've been googling because I feel like we are smart people and if I'm having trouble, it must not be that uncommon, and I'm at a loss. C is 7 months and I've never been totally comfortable with her car seat installation in our car. And the techs who will check are just located inconveniently for us, which is a lame excuse.
