Thanks for the replies! I think we are going to put locks on the bathrooms but not on any of the kids' bedrooms for now. I figured we could always change the door knobs later on if they want locks.

Bro and I are seven years apart and we moved when I was a late teen and he was in elementary. Growing up I didn't have locks, but he did and used his bedroom locks all the time for privacy. My parents were so annoyed. :silly: We shared a bathroom and the one walk-in accident that occurred was with him and a friend of mine. Otherwise, we had bathroom sharing down to a science with or without a lock. Our current house has locks, but they can be easily picked with a coin.

We had locks growing up that could be opened from the outside, so, I never got the point.

In our house the doors have locks, but while the kids are little I have tape over them so they don't lock themselves in.

I think if I had a choice I'd do no locks on bedrooms but keep on the bathroom.

@aprild: we had locks on both growing up. I have siblings but we purposely did not lock the door while showering so someone could come into the bathroom to grab something while someone else was showering (all girls at home at this point).

I do worry about locks on doors now while they are little. We actually have a random linen closet that has a lock! So random.

I don't see the need for locks on bedroom doors but I would instal privacy locks on any bathroom doors.

We always had doors with locks and never an issue growing up. My parents always put the key (which really is just a long piece of metal) up on the top of the door molding so that if they ever needed to get in they could just reach up and grab the key.

Sure as a little kid you don't need to lock the door, but I don't think it's unreasonable as your child reaches pre-teen age to start locking their door for privacy.

We have locking bathrooms, not locking kids rooms. The bathroom has a little key to open it which we keep up on the molding above the door

Most locking door knobs have a little hole in the non-lock side that you scan stick something into to unlock it. Most even come with a little tool to use for it, but a little screwdriver works too. We are in the process of replacing all our brass knobs too and got locking ones. We will be keeping the tool some place convenient.

We are replacing all the doorknobs in our new house, because they are gold colored, and we would prefer nickel. The current doorknobs on the kids' bedrooms have locks. I was thinking about replacing them with doorknobs without locks, since I never used a lock growing up. I also worry about my kids accidentally locking themselves in when they are little. Do your kids' bedrooms have locks on them?

Another question is if the kids' bathrooms should have locks. I never used a lock in my bathroom growing up, but I was an only child, so I didn't have siblings walking in on me. I can see having a lock for privacy, but at the same, I worry about younger kids locking themselves in. I've also heard the argument that you shouldn't lock the bathroom door while showering in case you fall and need someone to help you. What do you think?
