We're both introverted, DH more so than me, so I don't think we ever feel lonely in the sense that we don't hang out with people or attend social events!

My husband went through this recently, he didn't seem too bothered by it actually, I was more bothered because it meant I felt responsible for fulfilling all the roles of friends as well as wife.

In Toronto there is a sports and social league and he signed up for tennis and soccer. The tennis didn't yeald any friendships but the soccer team turned out great and now he has a set of friends he sees regularly for nights out, etc. I would recommend a team sport like that, where it's easy to go out for a drink afterwards.

@jaguar: we're in St Peters. Basically at the airport ;)

Is your husband into cycling at all? The newish friends my husband has made are all really into cycling - its an expensive sport and it means he's usually gone 2-4hrs on a Sunday, but he's developing relationships with the other dudes! Must be the shared physical pain!

Hiking/walking club or groups?Or maybe plan some family playdates to introduce him to the partners of your friends you think he might like?

I can commiserate that it's hard...right now as a SAHM with our two kids, my husband has said indirectly that he feels like I have so many good friends (as a result of moms groups, school, etc). We are in the process of moving and I know it makes him feel bad that he thinks I have more social obligations (ie more goodbyes to say) than he does, and he seems a bit sad about it. However, I think once we move the tables will be turned as he has lots of old friends in the location we are moving to, and I really don't.

@ScarletBegonia: I am SO glad it's not just us! We're out in the burbs, though - where are you guys based again? x

He's not into any particular sports (though he likes watching them!) and he's already going to church, but no groups or anything like that. He's also a little bit shy, which makes it tricky. I'm trying to see if there are any dads groups (with kids) in the area, but coming up short! Thanks for the suggestions guys. x

We moved last year to be nearer my parents and DH works from home as well. He's never admitted to being lonely but I think he is at times. My DH is into music and he met a guy at the local music store who invited him out to a open mic night. We've also been going to church. The people there have been very welcoming, but it just takes time to get to know people!

Can he join it start a dad's group? When we moved, my husband was a work at home dad. I had an immediate social circle, but he did not. He started a blog about being a SAHD and invited people to contact him. 4 years later, some of those guys are still his good friends!

My husband gets like thus often too. Its hard for him to feel comfortable putting himself out there. He has some good friends now. What helped us was for me to push him to get involved in teams and clubs. Cycling is a big hobby for him so he joined a team and there he made his closest new friend. Does your husband have any special interests?

@Grace: my DH had the same experience when he moved to Seattle, it took a really long time.

I would take advantage of having your LO and see if there are any dad & kid play groups or classes they could do together. I'm sure it's still harder for guys to connect this way but at least he would be around other new dads who are also going thru a big life change.

My husband had a very hard time when he first moved to my city (before he met me). I think it was five years before he met his group of friends.

I can, and we're in Sydney as well
My husband has two very close friends, but neither of them have kids, so its been a difficult adjustment and I think he feels left out a lot of the time. He has a couple of dad friends but as you say, he doesn't always feel comfortable calling them up and hanging alone.
Playdate??

Hi guys,

Has anyone's partner ever admitted that they've been a little lonely? My hubby is the sweetest, most gentle soul - but he's never been surrounded by many friends. We had a big social life in the UK when we lived abroad, but since moving back home to Sydney, he's not managed to have any luck with finding new friends.

His job is amazing, but he works from home - which is awesome for us, and spending time with little one, but means he doesn't have anyone to socialise with here. We have a few 'couple friends' but he said there's none he'd feel comfy with hanging out on their own, and feels awkward about what to do next.

I asked about joining a sport or a club of some kind, and he said he'd be keen, but doesn't know where to start. Does anyone have any advice/can comisserate?
