At around 7 months we went on another 3 hour drive but we left in the evening so she slept the whole time. For the first 4-6 weeks I usually sat in back and DH drove. I never really thought twice about giving him a bottle in the car though. Usually we would plan it so that we'd feed him right before we left and he'd fall asleep in the car. She was good but it messed up her sleep since she ended up sleeping a lot in the car. For the first trip the majority of time both of us were in the front seat and my husband just went back there once to give her food and I went back there for the last hour of the trip when she'd had enough. For that time frame, I didn't have to sit in the back unless I wanted to give her a bottle. But if the baby is pretty small, I probably wouldn't feed in the car seat either like @artbee says. But I don't feed her while in the car seat, I like to have her in my arms in case she chokes because if she's strapped in you can't quickly pick her up.
