@MaryM: yeah I hear you. Fortunately (?) he’s gone during the week but I’m a super
Light sleeper so I’m awake regardless. And sub-6 am waking just makes me start the day nauseous. Ugh.
He will also be in our master closet in his “closery” (his minicrib in our closet nursery) so I’m basically screwed. I’d really like to get them
Into the same room but can’t with his early waking unless I enjoy self torture.

@Littlebit7: I have super high sleep needs. So I know what a huge difference it can be to get up between 5:30 and 6

It took me a while on maternity leave to just give up and accept this was my life now! lol
I used to work 10 to 6 so I could sleep until 7:30 in the morning. But with my commute, I had to pull my hours back to 8 to 4 so I can get home before bedtime. So waking up at 5:30 totally SUCKS! Now I usually get out of bed at 5:30 and start getting myself ready and leave the baby to fuss until about 6. I'll get him and feed him if he full on cries, but most times he's just scooting around and fussing.

Can your husband sleep with ear plugs so it doesn't bother him in the morning? My husband doesn't seem to notice fussing at all (he's sound asleep until the baby wails) so I haven't had to deal with that. Plus he's usually at work before we wake during the week.

@alphagam84: so my only problem with doing that is my older one goes down after. So bumping him back would prolong her going to bed too. And bedtime is difficult enough as is. I do it by myself 5 nights a week. She sleeps or plays quietly in her crib until 645 (she’s 3). Since his last nap can go until 3 that means he’s a freaking disaster if I push him much past 630
Hmmm
@MaryM: yeah maybe I’ll stick with this. My husband has a lower tolerance for fussing than I do though which creates problems. And we are in an apartment; ugh neighbors.

I’ll play around with things and report back. Second kid is so much different than the first. I was soooo good about a solid schedule. This kid is much harder since his sister is all over the place outside doing life

I wouldn't push bedtime. We've done that with LO a couple times lately, and it always ends in him waking more at night. If we put him down at 6:30/7 he seems to sleep longer.

Some days he'll sleep 3 or 4 hours in one nap at daycare, but those days he usually only takes two naps instead of three. Or his third nap will be a catnap.

I think babies generally do what they need to if you just provide the ideal environment for it. Our son's worst sleep has happened when I've tried to intervene to get him to sleep "better"...only to realize he was doing just fine before I messed with anything!

And now, usually when he wakes up at 5 or 5:30 instead of 6, he'll either lie in bed simply fussing (not outright crying, just letting us know he's there) or he's fussing slightly louder because he woke up having to poop. ( @cake2017: was there some sort of poop related full moon this morning?? DS had the most MASSIVE and gross poop this morning!)

Like the others, if I treat the really early wake ups (4 or 5) like night wakings (barely moving him, keeping him dark, not talking or turning on lights), he'll usually go back to sleep and sometimes sleep even later than I wanted!

My girls always took long naps. Throughout time they kept their 2-3 hour naps and dropped the others at the normal ages (so went down to 2 and 1 at normal times).

I think I treated anything before 5:30 as anAM feed until at least 10 months, but I’d say try the later bedtime first. 6:30 is early and that might start interfering with dinner soon, plus having it a little later can make evenings less hectic if you work.

Yes, agree with @alphagam84: suggestion. I'd try pushing back bedtime by 15 minutes each day and give it a week of consistency.

My LO switched recently from a daycare where he didn't nap well to one where they put a lot of effort into getting them to take decent length naps (one of his naps is consistently 2+ hours). He has started sleeping fewer total hours at night, and I think it's related. Maybe it's true to a point that sleep begets sleep, but at some point there's a constraint on how many hours they will sleep overall.

Could you push back his bedtime by 30-45 mins to try and get him to sleep later in the morning without interfering with naps? Our daughter was an early riser as well and it was so frustrating!

I don’t think you need to wake him. That’s just me. 2 hour naps are good in my book for that age.
Early wake ups I treat as a night feed. Boring, rock, nurse, burp and back in the crib. For us, we dont enter the room before 6am. Today LO who is 12months woke up at 520am because he had a huge poop but that’s clearly different....

I think you just have to play around with it and see how the days go. Go by his cues and see when he’s tired. Eat, play, sleep worked for us for along time and we still do that... at 5months he was taking 3 naps- first two were long(1-2.5 hours) and the third was a catnap- 30-45mins long. Bedtimewas at 630pm with a strict routine that I learned to do from the mamas on here! ....

hope that helps!

I realize this might not be a bad thing but I’m worried I’m undermining myself

My Lo is 5 months. He sleeps 630-530 or 6 and takes 2-3 naps a day. My problem is the early waking for the day combined with super long naps. And I’m wondering if he’s napping too long during the day. We just sleep trained 2 weeks ago (and when I say sleep trained I mean I didn’t run in at first cry and poof...he just sorta slept through.)

Anyway..he’s been waking at 5-5:45 for the day. Sometimes I’ll nurse and he might go back down until 645 but today he got up at 515 and wouldn’t sleep. I put him down for his first nap at 830 and it’s now 1045 and he’s still asleep. Umm. He naps so long at times during the day that there just isn’t time for three naps.
Should I wake him? Cap his naps to 2 hours? I’d prefer if he slept at night 630-630 at the least because his fussing wakes my older one.
