@hilsy85: @oliviabolivia: thanks for the tip on the timing! I might try that and see if it helps. The funny thing is I posted this after his 1:30 feeding then when he woke up at 5:30 he only took 20 minutes for both sides. Maybe he I was going to start cutting him off... ;)

My Lo was also nursing like 45 min total in the beginning. My pedi told me that I could do 10-15 min on each side, as anything more than that was comfort sucking. Depends on how long you want to give him, but I think it's fine to cut him off after a certain point. Unless you're having trouble with your supply in which case sucking helps build it.

My LC said that anything over 30 minutes is just comfort nursing. At the beginning DD would nurse endlessly, not at 3 months she's done after 12 minutes. He'll get there too.

What do you do to try to keep him awake during feeds? If you really want to you can use a wet washcloth or wipe to wake him up enough to eat.

I think eventually you just need to find a good time limit and cut him off after that. I know my LO would just lay there latched on forever.

I would say totally normal. In the first three months or so DD would eat 30 minutes one side then I would diaper change and swaddle again and do 30 minutes the other side. She was up every 2-3 hours so didn't leave much time for sleep lol. I would just settle in for a Netflix show and let her call the shots. At 7 months we are up for 30 minutes once a night from start to finish so she's gotten better. I also think I just have a snuggly leisurely eater!

LO can easily spend an hour on one side for night feeds. This is killer for me and obviously cuts into his sleep as when I return to work we'll have a hard enough time getting him 10-11 hours without accounting for 2 hours of feeding time. I suspect he gets lazy and dozes off (we keep him swaddled/reswaddle him after diaper change so if he nods off we can quickly put him down but even when I'd unswaddle him it took forever). I'm hesitant to cut him off though because I think he's still getting something even when he slows down, and sometimes he gets a "second wind" and swallows lots near the middle/end.

For comparison, he does both sides in 20-30 min during the day.

Is this typical? Is there anything I could/should be doing differently?

He is 9 weeks.

ETA I only give him one side now at night bc it takes so long... So it's 2 night feeds of an hour each.
