I have a Skyla IUD. I was intrigued by the slightly lower hormone levels and I don't need five years of coverage (Skyla only lasts for three years). We are planning to try for kid number two before that.

I had Mirena for 2 years in between babies. It was an amazing experience for me. I didn't have a period for that entire time, it actually affected my libido less than the pill did, and I got pregnant our first month trying after getting it removed. LO2 turned 8 weeks old yesterday so I go in tomorrow morning to get my second Mirena. DH is planning to get a vasectomy before the 5 years is up but this was the best option for us right now.

I am planning on getting a mirena as well. The rare stories like @smocks: really freaked me out so I didn't want to get one until we were pretty sure we were done having babies. At this point we are 95% sure we are done (after this one finally makes her debut) so I'm less worried about fertility afterwards. I've never had one but hear way more good stories than bad.

Ive had my Mirena for almost 4 years. I have no periods, no issues. I do think it caused a little weight gain and I agree that it effects my libido, though.

Although, a newborn would probably mess with mu libido worse, so worth it!

I don't know if I've shared this on HB yet, but I'm in the small minority of those with severe complications from the Mirena.

I had mine placed at my 6 week pp visit on the Friday before Labor day. The first one she tried to insert "misfired" (I think the spring loaded insertion mechanism or whatever shot off early). So she got another one, and immediately it hurt. I bled pretty profusely for a few days. On Saturday night, I called the after hours number and the on-call OB at the hospital told me even if there was a complication, they wouldn't really do anything for it in the ER (DH is an ER doc and confirmed this - if anything was really wrong, they would schedule a surgery likely the next week), and to make an appt with my regular clinic ASAP on Tuesday.

On Tuesday, a different OB at my practice searched for it, couldn't find it, and so they sent me for an Ultrasound. I went in for the U/S, where they also did not see the Mirena. She said one of two things happened - either it fell out on it's own, or it had perforated into my abdomen - they would send me for an Xray at the hospital as an abundance of caution to see if it was in there.

Well I'm glad they did, because that's exactly what happened. The Mirena perforated my uterus. So they scheduled me for a laparoscopy to remove the IUD the following day.

I guess this is a pretty rare complication, but I think there was one or two other ladies on HB that had this same complication, so it's definitely something to consider. Make sure if you go with that option, you have good insurance just in case. DH works for a hospital system so with the employee benefit package, I think I paid about $100 out of pocket for this whole ordeal, but everything would have almost been $8,000 all in without it.

@yoursilverlining: that's interesting about Mirena during menopause!

I'm also on my second Mirena. I had one for three years before LO. Then had another placed around 3 mos PP. I have been very happy with it.

@MrsSRS: :( Sorry you're dealing with that too. Mine is definitely caused from the Mirena - I didn't get it placed until 12 months postpartum, so I know it's not nursing or anything else that's affecting my libido, and the change was immediate once I had the Mirena placed.

I had a Mirena after my first baby and loved it. I was able to get pregnant our first month trying after removal. I will be getting second one in a few more weeks (6 weeks postpartum right now). We are pretty sure we are done having babies but not 100%. DH will likely get a vasectomy in the future but I will probably keep getting Mirenas anyway since my periods are so much better and they are completely coveres by our insurance.

I had Mirena after #1 and might get another after #2 is here. It was really uncomfortable to get inserted and I spotted on and off for like 3 months. I was about to make an appt to get it removed when it all magically got better. I loved not having periods, but I think it effected my libido... or maybe that was the years of sleep deprivation :silly:

@Mrs D: I got pregnant my 2nd cycle post removal, and I know lovehoneybee got pregnant her first cycle post removal. I know you're pretty sure you're done, but I wouldn't worry about post removal fertility.

DH will get snipped after we are done. I won't get an IUD again cause then he has no reason to get snipped. But if we have to use condoms, he will make an appointment sooner. I have taken care of the birth control this far, he can handle it once we are done.

I am on my second Mirena and I have had really positive experiences both times. The one I had before having kids hurt like a MOFO to get put in (seriously, horrific pain) but the one I got after LO didn’t hurt AT ALL. I don’t get a period while on Mirena, which is pretty awesome.
My husband was going to get a vac (and probably still will), but IUD rates are as good as sterilization rates and with Mirena I don’t get a period, so we decided to go this route and reevaulate plans once this IUD expires. My OB also mentioned at my last appointment that she is seeing a big increase in the number of menopausal women getting mirenas – not for birth control, but to decrease symptoms and bleeding. So, who knows, I might end up with one again, vac or not!

@Mrs D: I am interested in a tummy tuck too (although it probably won't happen) - had not even thought about getting my tubes tied at the same time!

@Adira: ahhhh thank you!!!! The extent of my knowledge on the subject is my step dad said no iud until you are done having babies - he's always been concerned about fertility issues post iud. (He's an ob). I plan to have more discussions with him...now that it's that point for us!

@Mrs D: Mirena, Skyla, and Paraguard are all IUDs. Paraguard is the copper one - it contains no hormones. Mirena and Skyla both contain some hormones. But they are all IUDs.

I have the mirena, and I absolutely love it. I wanted Skyla for less hormones, and easier insertin. My midwife said its not really a big difference, and the mirena means less likelihood of periods since the lining doesn't build up. Insertion was a breeze for me. I spotted for two weeks, and nada since. It was inserted 8 weeks postpartum in August. No periods, no funky side effects, and I don't have to think about it for 5 years.

ETA: Nursing is still completely fine with it, and my supply didn't diminish at all.

I have the Mirena - that's totally fine to have while nursing.

For me though, it's really affected my libido and my sensitivity. I've only had it a month, so I'm hoping my body will adjust, but right now, it kind of sucks.

ETA: I think I'm in the minority for this side affect though - no one else I've talked to have experienced this.

I have a copper IUD that was placed around 8 weeks PP.
Pros:
Once it's in, you forget about it, I hated having to remember to take pills.
No hormones. I will never go back on hormonal BC.
Safe for breastfeeding. I assume Mirena is too since a lot of women around here seem to get it a few weeks PP.

Cons:
Heavier/longer periods, I've had mine for nearly 2 years and the first 6 months I had very heavy bleeding/irregular periods. From what I understand, you don't have this issue with the Mirena though.
Does not prevent ovulation, which is the main difference with Mirena. Some people are not comfortable with this possibility.

So...I'm in my third trimester with my second and likely final baby. I'm starting to think about/research birth control plans so I have my thoughts in order before the baby comes and I am sleep deprived.

Looking for reviews/thoughts/experiences with some of the long term birth control options....all I know about is really mirena and the thing they put in your arm. Not even sure if any of these are acceptable while nursing...

We will likely pursue a permanent option after this LO is about 2 if we feel the same as we do now!
