Yes, but once we dropped a nap, the remaining nap/naps got longer.

For S, I don't think night sleep and naps relate at all. She sleeps fine at night but naps are inconsistent...we have spells where she'll do 30-45min naps throughout the day and weeks where she'll take longer 1.5-2hr naps. There doesn't appear to be a reason for it other than it's some developmental thing where she's not as settled when she's working through something.

@scg00387: c will be 6 months at the end of this month. I am trying to lengthen her wake times. I'm so used to going to put her down at the first sign of tiredness, but she's getting a little old for that now, right? I need to do some 5-9 month sleep research I guess.

On the plus side- I won the battle this morning. She fussed for 20 full minutes but didn't cry, went back to sleep for another hour and a half almost! So she slept about two hours and woke up totally rested and happy. I think I need to start leaving her longer, I usually just wait five or ten minutes and get her. (Unless she is really crying but she doesn't usually wake up in a full cry).

That's what happened when Lucy started sleeping 5 hour stretches at night about 4 weeks ago. She won't nap more than 45 minutes at a time. And now her night sleep is back to crap (2-3 hour stretches) and she STILL won't take longer naps.

You just described my LO. He catnaps during the day and rarely has naps that last more than 30-40 minutes. Sometimes he skips a third nap altogether. At night he sleeps from 7-5:30 without any wake ups (usually) and then he eats and goes back down until 7-8.

I hate that he is such a horrible napper but I'll take it for good sleep at night!

Oftentimes more consolidated night sleep (which you're getting...yay!!) means your LO is better rested and probably needs more waketime before her first nap. Try stretching her maybe 15 minutes. If she's not tired enough to sleep longer than one sleep cycle then you risk getting in an undertired-overtired loop.

Getting long stretches of sleep is way more restful than clocking in lots of time overnight with multiple wake ups  .

C is finally having some better, longer stretches of sleep at night- 6 or 7 hours for the first stretch has been happening more often, which is great. But now her naps are getting shorter. She used to do 1.5 - 2 hour naps morning and afternoon then a shorter one (1 sleep cycle) in the later afternoon. Now she's waking up in under an hour as often as not.

Her total overnight sleep isn't really going up, she's just not waking up to eat as often. Anyone else had this happen? 45 minutes is not a long enough nap, especially since she refuses to take more than 3 naps a day no matter how short they are.

Currently having a battle if wills- she's fussing but not crying after waking up at the 40 minute mark and I'm hoping, but not expecting, for her to go back to sleep.
