@cabbagerose: That sounds like an awesome roadtrip!

My family lives 12 hours away, so we regularly make the trip in one day. DS has made the trip while 3 m, 9m, a couple times when he was 1, and just over 2. We're going again when he's 2.5 next week ;) DD has been 6 weeks and will be 4 months for this next one.

We actually go mostly screen-less. The last bit of the trip in the dark is the worst bit, so if DS is fussy, he gets to watch a couple episodes of Little Einsteins before we get there. But we manage the first 10-11 hours without it. It helps that he can look out the window and point things out now (cows, cows, cows, cows, train!) and parceling out gummies and marshmallows for bribery has always worked great ;)

DS mostly sleeps or coos. She doesn't take a pacifier or a bottle, so when she's fussy, I have to actually feed her. It is only a real pain over the mountain passes when her ears hurt.

Two 20 hour trips (each way) at 10 months, and at 2.5 and 2 months. The 20 hours is drive time, with stops it ended up being 24 -26 hours. The drive was split into two days each with a hotel overnight.

We did stay about two weeks - one in Houston, one in Dallas. We live in DC.

Longest was to Outer Banks, about 12 hours but we just had one kid at the time and she was only 10 months or so.

We do a 7 hour drive every other month to see the in-laws, so they are very used to the car now!

We've done 10 hours each way for a vacation. It took 15 hours with stops and was pretty miserable. We've also done 24 hours but it was split over a week only driving 4-5 hours a day so that was not bad. We are going to do the 10 hour trip again this year and I am dreading it.

We have done a 7-8 hour trip three times round trip (once with a 4-month-old, once with a 16-month-old, and once with a 2ish-year-old) to travel home for Christmas. We leave at bedtime and drive overnight to miss holiday traffic on the 95-N corridor. Generally our son takes a little bit longer to fall asleep than usual, but still falls asleep and sleeps decently well. We are definitely tired the next day though, and I'm not sure I have the stamina for it with 2 kids this year!

We go to Myrtle Beach every year and its about 10hours - kids complain but oh well - haha - we stop and have a DVD player in the car and they have books and other things to keep them occupied.

2 years ago we went to Jacksonville and that ended up being an 18 hour car trip - left at 3am and again made stops along the way to stretch legs -

I think flights are super $$$ so we drive whenever we can!

We did almost 7 hours over Memorial Day with a 2 and 4 year old. Duel DVD players, tablet, snacks, games, drinks, etc. and it was fine! they would start getting whiney and we would stop for a break and let them stretch - also left at nap time to get a good 2-3 hours of sleeping :)

We did a road trip with our 3mo visiting familly several states away. We spread the drive both out & back over 3days & stopped every few hrs--several times because LO was screaming--to nurse, do diaper changes & stretch our legs. It wasn't too bad.

When DS was two months old my sister and I did a 16 hour road trip but it was spread over three days. Lots of stopping and one night with family.

When DS was 2 we did a 12 hour road trip to visit family and it was miserable. DH thought we should drive there over night so he could just drive and we could sleep. DS screamed/cried about every 45 min. We arrived at the IL's tired and cranky. The drive back we did in the day and it was better but took a lot longer.

I'm glad that we decided not to do the trip this year as it was kind of the year for us to go out there. Maybe next year with a 5 yo would be doable.

Last summer with 1.5 year old Dallas Texas to Chicago 14 hours. On the way back to Dallas we did a road trip going to the National Parks. Chicago to Mount Rushmore (13 hours). Mount Rushmore to Yellowstone (8 hours). Yellowstone to Grand Teton . Grand Teton to Mesa Verde (10 hours) Mesa Verde to Oklahoma City.(12 hours) Oklahoma City to Dallas (4 hours). I thought we were crazy. We had a great time. Packed a lot of snacks and different toys. Oh we did this in 7 days.

We do a 12-hour drive every year (well, 12 there and 12 back). Usually we split one of the directions into 9 and 3, but the other all in one shot. We flew when DS1 was 7 months old. For the car, we've done it when:
DS1 was 1.5
We skipped this year because LO2 was born.
DS1 was 3.5, DS2 was 1

And we leave Saturday for a trip with DS1 4.5, DS2 is 2. Wish us luck!

We try to start the 12 hour drive in the middle of the night, but that doesn't always work. This year we won't leave until about 7 a.m. and arrive at 8 p.m. (we hope...)

Our first long road trip was when LO was about 22 months. We drove about 12 hours each direction. Then we did another trip about 3 months later that was 16 hours each direction. We've done the 12 hour trip two more times with her. Since we added number 2, we've only drove about 5 hours. She's not as good for driving.

We do not leave at bedtime - they will as other have said stay awake. We put them to bed and then leave at like 10-11pm when it's dark out. They will stay awake for a while but conk out. We got into our destination at 4am and the boys went back to sleep for a few more hours.

When we drive back we leave at the point of their PM nap. They will sleep for a shorter period but we just go with it. Usually they will just quietly look out the window for a while, then DS1 will point things out, then we play music they like, and finally towards the end we give the iPad. The baby did get cranky and bored which I get, but there wasn't much we could do for him. We stopped once for gas and once for dinner and that was it!

We did a long one with a 1 year old that wasn't bad. 6 hours I think without stops but we broke it up. We've driven to Yosemite many many times now, which has taken anywhere from 4-10 hours with stops depending on where we live. That's probably my max unless the road trip is the trip itself.

I couldnt imagine doing it again with our almost 2 year old, but I know we'll have to again because flights are expensive and we're expecting our second. Sigh.
