@Smurfette: Thanks lady! Not entirely gone, but a lot more bearable. We'll be open windows & doors all week for sure!

Thanks for all the tips! It's officially been 24 hrs of dealing with this, but we spent ALL DAY cleaning and doing laundry. The VINEGAR and Baking Soda have done some amazing work pretty fast! There's still some lingering smoke smell and we'll be doing laundry all week I'm sure (so sad - all the baby stuff I washed needs to get re-washed!) - but the difference was incredible quickly after we put out vinegar bowls everywhere!

The bright side of this fiasco is that I feel like the house will be spic & span clean when Baby Shopaholic arrives!

@Maysprout: lol! He is definitely already feeling terrible and spending his whole one day to relax this week cleaning like Mad man . And he already said he knows he has to replace my big All Clad stockpot. I feel bad for him too. And yes we have two air purifiers (had to borrow one) running . I will have to try the vinegar wiping on the walls too. Thanks!

I think your husband needs to pony up for a massage or goody for you while he does the laundry. It will help him remember next time to turn off the stove.

I agree with @Cole: about the vinegar and baking soda, put out lots and lots of bowls even washing the walls with vinegar. Plus I'd get an air purifier, it will help a ton.

@Cole: thanks for the tips! Yes, we have to go get vinegar and baking soda today in the masses! Luckily we don't have ny carpet.

Even our one blanket we slept with last night smells of smoke and I have a headache. But everything is getting laundered. I hope we don't need to call professionals but glad to know there are some!

Ugh, I'm sorry, I've been there (though not with the pregnancy part thank goodness) and its awful. My college roommate microwaved ramen and forgot to put water in it and it basically caught on fire. Our apartment smelled HORRIBLE, but I promise it did go away! I hope you were able to get some rest!

That is such a miserable situation! We had a downstairs neighbor do something similar in an apartment but to a larger degree (she left corned beef on the stove in a pot all day...) there was smoke pouring out of both of our apartments and we had to have a fire restoration company take all of our things and clean them. Our complex was terrible to deal with so we wound up cleaning the apartment ourselves-- somethings that worked well for us were lots of bowls of baking soda and bowls of vinegar, both absorb smell pretty well (some people say there isn't anything special about baking soda and that flour will work just as well.) We cleaned the carpets several times with a rented machine and wiped the walls down with watered down vinegar and that helped more than I expected. Hopefully it isn't that bad for you guys but I figured I would throw it out there just in case!

Awww you poor thing. My BFF had this exact same thing happen to her. I think it took a while for the smell to be gone. She may have even hired some kind of cleaner to try and the smell gone. Good luck! So glad you had somewhere else to go and that everything else was ok.

Today has officially been one of the longest days of pregnancy so far. I type this post out via my phone, on an aerobed, from out empty condo.

Started out early this morning for our all-day one-day cram class for Childbirth Prep. Came home to the smell of smoke coming from our house. DH had boiled some soup in the morning while I was showering and left the stove on for the 8+ hours we were gone!!! Thankfully 1) it had been on simmer 1, 2) we have an electric stove, and 3) there was no oil, so nothing caught on fire. But EVERY.SINGLE.THING in every room of our house reeks of smoke! We tried airing the place out for 7 hours now. At first we tried hanging out in the backyard, but all the smoke was blowing out of the house and I was soooo tired after our class, I finally broke down and went to our room for a nap. Probably a terrible idea for a pregnant woman! I slept fully aware and concious of the awful smoke permeating thru everything from my hair to the pillows and blankets. Finally, my head and nostrils hurt so much, but I'd gotten a much needed nap, and we went out to eat. Ran into my BFF and she could smells us from yards away!
On top of that, our poor, blind Chihuahua had been in the house all day. :(. We feel so bad for her but she seems to be doing ok.

Finally even now DH felt so bad, we had to leave th house to keep airing it out and didn't want me to inhale anymore smoke. I guess it's one good thing our condo hasn't been renting and is still vacant. So we ar camped out here and doing loads of laundry so we can have some pillows and blankets to sleep with. Coming onto an 18 hr day at 37 weeks. Gah! I told DH I'm so thankful we didn't have a newborn with this same situation. Can you imagine?

I can only imagine how many DAYS I'll be doing laundry for...

*end rant*
