We've never taken DS on a plane, but we have driven to Disney with him 3 times. We usually do it in one straight shot, and it takes 8.5 hours according to Google maps. With DS and all the stops we make for him, it takes more like 10-11 hours.

@looch: I recently got my hands on some Dramamine for Kids and it has been a lifesaver. We have used it on 4 recent car trips and one boat trip. I gave him just half a pill for the car trips and he didn't complain about feeling sick at all. On the boat I gave him a whole pill and it made him pretty sleepy, but it was a smooth ride, so I probably should have just given him half.

Our longest flight so far with DS has been 12 hours with 1 connection. He was just 11 months and it wasn't that bad. Our longest trip for both is in 2 months, and I'm dreading it. It's going to be 19 hours with 2 connections. Shoot me now! Actually, my older LO will probably be fine, but the younger one has never traveled so far and is in a shrieking phase and loooves to climb on everything....! I hope I survive!

@looch: From what I've read online, dramamine is pretty safe for kids two years old and up. So I don't see why you couldn't give your son a dose just in case!

I do worry about giving any meds to the kids. So when we were in LA, we usually only gave doses for longer trips... we didn't give doses for shorter trips. It's probably fine though!

@mrbee: I am freaked out that my son is going to get car sick...he told me that his tummy hurts when we go far away in the car...he's not gotten sick recently, but there have been some doozies in our past and it makes me really anxious when we travel.

Our longest car trip was NYC area to middle Georgia to see my family. It was two days of driving 8-10 hours a day (depending on stops and length of stops). LO was fine, but we did stop pretty much every 2 hours and I had to pack tons of her food (she's MSPI) and lots of activities/toys/books (too young for screen time).

All of our flights have been short--3 hours, tops. yay!

ROAD TRIP: 9 hour drive up north to SF. We only drove with DD, so not with both kids... but she really surprised me at how well she did. We barely had to stop, and she didn't even get that antsy. It made us realize that what we imagined was far worse than our reality. We're still scared about the idea of going on a road trip with DS though - he is so active and gets restless even for the one hour drive down to SD!

AIRPLANE TRIP: the last time we took a plane ride was when DD was 2.5 and DS was 3 months old. It was 9 hours, with one layover. DD did great - I guess she does fine with sitting still, and new scenery. The iPad helped too. She had a really hard time falling asleep on the plane though... and at one point we were stuck on the plane for an hour. DS was 3 months so super easy. We will be going on a 2.5 hour plane ride with him this week and I'm nervous about it even though it's such a short flight. He is just so antsy and LOUD!

But I am a firm believer that the more you do it, the better the kids adjust and get used to it... so I don't want fear or anticipation to hold us back from any kind of travel because looking back, I've never regretted any of the trips I've taken with our kids even if I'm nervous leading up to them.

We always try to either travel overnight for long car trips (it's 7ish hours to visit my mom) to maximize sleep time or time it with a nap so they'll sleep about halfway through. Thankfully the toddler is an excellent car sleeper!

We moved 3 hours north when DS was 5 months old so my kids are use to the trip now - When we 1st moved I was doing the trip at least 1 time a month. I always stopped 2 hrs in at a Johns Hopkins facility to nurse - haha

We also drive 10 hours south to Myrtle Beach every year for vacation. We usually stop after 3 hours for a pee break - stop for lunch and then maybe 1 more pee break. Kids do great - they sleep some and use their kindles or watch a movie with the DVD system.

eta: also PSU football in the fall - that's 3 hrs one way - DH and DS do lots of "business trips" (up and back in same day)

never flown with our LO, but we have taken the following length road trips in his 11 months of life (distance is each direction, so driving this distance down one day, then again back another day): many 2-3 hour trips, several 4-5 hours, and two 6-8 hour trips. Disclaimer: the hour length of trips is how long the trips would have been without baby - they always end up taking 1-2 hours extra now with baby.

I used to be so worried about long car rides and plane flights, but the kids have been true troopers. Thought it might be fun to all share our longest trips with the kids, along with tips/tricks for survival!

It's been a real learning experience for us - mostly around how to manage meltdowns, and the importance of dramamine.

ROAD TRIP: We drove down to Maryland two years ago for a friends' wedding. It should have been a 4 hour drive, but we hit bad traffic both ways! It was 8 hours down, and 5 hours back up. Thankfully the kids slept most of the way... although our daughter was either crying or vomiting every minute she was awake. We figured out later that she gets car sick, just like her dad (sorry honey!). Now we give her dramamine and she's fine in the car.

AIRPLANE TRIP: When we visit my parents, the longest leg is the flight out to Korea. About 15 hours or so. The first year we did it there were some meltdowns, but nothing so bad in recent years. Thankfully Steve Jobs invented iPads to keep my kids entertained! We've done this flight a couple of times now, and I no longer worry at all before we take off. Oh except about how much battery is on our iDevices!
