@mrbee: Hehe, I had to look it up. Apparently, my company has 4,000 employees worldwide. I think it's 2000 or so in the US.

I looked into this because I thought about leaving my job this year. I wanted to make sure I was covered under my new employer. I heard that you have to be with a company for a year for you to qualify under FMLA...aka maternity benefits. So they aren't obligated to give you benefits. (Also, I think FMLA, secures your job while you are on leave.) Although, maybe your company might make an exception if you do need maternity benefits. (I'm not sure about this.)

(I do know a friend who just started her job and found out she was pregnant about 2 months later. She's a teacher, so her benefits might be different. She apparently didn't have any issues getting benefits.)

I guess you could start a job but you would have to wait 3-4 months to start TTC, since by the time you give birth, it will have been a year.

Sorry about your job situation. I've had some changes in the past month. I'm hoping to stick it out for a year.

I plan on leaving my current job in about a year... I hope to get pregnant and use my company's amazing maternity benefits and then leave. (Well, that's my plan at the moment.)

From the US Dept- FMLA website:
http://www.dol.gov/dol/topic/benefits-leave/fmla.htm

"Employees are eligible for leave if they have worked for their employer at least 12 months, at least 1,250 hours over the past 12 months, and work at a location where the company employs 50 or more employees within 75 miles. Whether an employee has worked the minimum 1,250 hours of service is determined according to FLSA principles for determining compensable hours or work."

I had a very upsetting argument with my boss (I know, bad) and as a result of it, started looking for a new job (I'm a teacher, I was just applying to other schools). I had an interview and it looked promising but in the end, I didn't get the job. *IF* I did, I would have held off having kids for 2-3 years. But because I was back at my current school and had already worked there for 5 years, we decided to TTC.

I'm sure it happens that people get pregnant upon starting a new job but I'm not sure how favourable it is.

I've had a rough week at work, so this post may be a bit emotionally charged. I absolutely love my company and love my job, but this week has been an overload of feeling like I'm carrying the weight of others on my team.

I'm not actively looking and the number one reason is because the job security/pay/benefits through our ttc journey/maternity leave.

Have any of you started a new job and had to take maternity leave within the first year? Just wanted to hear some real life stories on how best to determine the pros/cons...
