Did you ever listen to Free to Be You and Me when you were growing up? Granted I grew up listening to the record but apparently there is a book that goes along with it. Here is the music: http://smile.amazon.com/dp/B00JRBG8Z4 (looks like if you are an Amazon Prime member you can download the mp3 for free) and here is the book: http://smile.amazon.com/dp/0762430605. It's all music and stories about gender equality.

Here is a kids book about Malala, the young girl who was shot by the Taliban for promoting women's education and she ended up winning the Nobel peace prize. I ordered it on Friday but haven't gotten it yet so I haven't read it myself but I'm sure it discusses empowering women, equal rights, etc

@jedeve: Good point. I'm sure I refer to the group as the boys. I'll watch out for that.

I haven't had any direct experience, but I do catch myself (because I have boys) saying stuff like, "oh boys love to get messy!" when. I really just mean "kids love to get messy!" Have you noticed if you call them "the boys?" Maybe just saying "kids" would help her feel more included? I'm just spitballing.

I rarely have to deal with that kind of bullshit, but if my child says 'XX told me that girls can't do Y', I just say, oh, well, they're wrong. Girls can do anything. Thankfully she's still at the age where she believes me.

Came across this one, "Clothesline Clues to Jobs People Do" and it actually has a female mail carrier in it! Haven't read the book, but it looks cute.

I was going to say the same thing as @Mrs. Tiger! I would also recommend "The Paper bag Princess," but that is more girls don't need to be saved vs girls can do anything. "He Bear, She Bear" is a good one.

My family is very fortunate to live on a block with lots of very active kids. I think it's great for my 2 year old. The only thing is there are 8 boys and only one other girl (and she rarely plays out front).

LO tells me all about the things boys do. Since she's the youngest by two years the boys often tell her she can't do things until she's a big boy. I point out to her and the boys that big girls can do things too.

Today LO told me only boys (men) can deliver mail. I actually argued with my 2 year old. Face palm.

I'd like to read her a book with a girl/woman can do whatever a boy/man can do. Any suggestions?
