@Mrs. High Heels: thanks for the advice! I talked to the daycare director and she suggested I do just that-invite the friends he plays with most.

So thanks for the advice everyone. I decided to do a friend party at a train store. I think he'll love it!

@Amelieisme: my friend recently invited some daycare friends, and what she did was ask the teachers to give her a list of the kids that her daughter played with most regularly at school (that way she wasn't having to invite the whole class). once she got that list, she had the teachers either hand it to the parents directly, or have it taped to the child's cubby. i really liked that idea and might do it next year!

We were going to have friends & kids over to the house but ended up sick for two weeks around his birthday! So we just did 3 candles in a donut for the three of us, once we all felt better. He was still ecstatic about his birthday!

We had a party at the park with family, friends and her daycare friends. LO loves her little friends and would have been upset if we didn't do a party like her friends.

@Amelieisme: We didn't know any of the parents and just took the invites to daycare and had his teacher put them in the children's cubbies. It was actually a great way to get to know some of the parents.

@Amelieisme: no we did not really know the parents. But we were on the later end of the birthday "season" in her class so I knew some of them a little from other parties. We just brought invites to daycare and put them in the sign in/out book which seems to be the norm. Have any other daycare kids had parties yet?

On the weekend before we invited my ILs and DH cousin, (also her teacher), her husband over for dinner. We made homemade pasta sauce which is her favorite. I made her a curious George cake.
On her birthday we took her out to brunch then to the Zoo. She loves the zoo! On her birthdays I also made Her a small Daniel tiger cake because she asked.
I made banana cupcakes with curious George rings as toppers for her to celebrate at daycare with her friends.

I really wanted to throw her a friend party but I was basically unemployed. It just wasn't financially smart. Hopefully I will be working full time still for her 4th so we can throw her a friend party!

Invited daycare friends, do you know the parents? That's part of my issue is that I don't have many friends with kids and don't really have a lot of kids to invite unless we do daycare friends. Did you just take the invites to daycare then?

We are doing a joint party with a friend from day care (we are friends with the parents and hang out away from school all the time). Their birthdays are really close and last year the parties were on the same weekend with probably 80% overlap on guests so it just makes more sense. Plus, I'm due 10 days after my LO's bday (though we are doing the parting a little early) so having my friend be able to handle the majority of party planning is a huge bonus. We are renting out an indoor bounce house place for a private party there. Even at 2 LO understood birthdays and we were going to all the other kids parties and she would have been very sad to not get a party.

We rented a room at an indoor play area place and invited some friend's kids and the kids from daycare. We ended up with about 10 kids plus parents and served hot dogs, chips, fruit salad and pasta salad. Pretty easy and the kids had a ton of fun.

We are planning on a pizza party at a local place you can rent that has old school games (25 cents to play), bounce house, ect. We figured that she deserves a big party this year since she's now a big sister and had her world rocked this year.

We are having one with grandparents and cousins at our lake house, same as the past two years. We aren't inviting friends this year though, as it got quite out of hand with the size last year. I'm guessing we will still have 25-30 ppl though-ugh. I would much rather have a small party for DS but everyone now expects the party so it's hard to scale back now.

I was due a week after her third birthday so I didn't want anything at the house or that we couldn't cancel if needed. We ended up just inviting cousins and close friends of the family to a community pool. We told her the night before about the party. I'm glad we did it because she did remember and does still talk about it. But she doesn't really care or remember who was there or what colors the cake was etc. So I think doing something but staying really simple is key.

Now this year for her fourth they are getting more and more into talking about going to so and so's party and wanting to have specific friends.

No 3rd bday party for DD, and don't plan on one for DS. We just did cake and dinner at home with me, LO's, DH, grandparents, and our siblings (their aunties).

We did parties for their 1st birthdays bc it's Korean tradition, but after that planned not to do parties til they could ask for one themselves. For DD, she had one at 4 and she wants one for her 5th, so we'll throw parties for her to have with her friends. Same for DS.

Lo's third was her first friend party where we invited her daycare class plus family nearby and had it at a park. It was pretty chill with store bought pizza and cupcakes. We had fun and she had a blast so I think we will be doing friend parties from now on. But not all her friends had parties we were invited to, so I would say just to do what you feel like!

We had a large themed party at our house with family, neighbors, our friends and friends from LO's daycare. But, I like hosting parties. I like making the food and stuff and it's not a PITA for me; if it were or I just didn't want to do a party, I wouldnt. I don't think you should feel pressured either way!

It was 11 adults and 6 kids, we set up tablecloths on our dining table and deck table for adults, and coffee table for kids. it was a freeezing cold night, so we lit our outdoor fireplace, and then had coffee/cake for desert and everybody went home by 8pm.

Did you have a party? I feel pressure from my family to have a party, but don't really want to! I'd be happy just doing a family thing. When he's older and has his own friends to invite, I'd be all for a party, but we aren't there yet. Wondering what the norm is?
