@Applesandbananas: yeah, we don't take her. I send our daughter to daycare for over 9 hours a day M-F, I can't stand the thought of her being in "daycare" on Sundays. We're going to start taking her when she can go to the children's church during service when she turns 3.

Our church has a baby room in the back w/ a huge glass window & sound system connected so parents can hear/see everything that's going on while being with their kids. There are chairs, a play mat & toys in there. We also have Sunday school for ages 1 & up! For the youngest class, the parents can be in the class with their babies.

If there are other parents w/ young kids, maybe you guys can get together and start something and take turns babysitting, or recruiting young people at the church to help?

The first few months were so easy with LO. She always just slept through mass with either myself or grandma holding her. Now that she is 8 months it's much more difficult cause she is very vocal, loves to fake cough for half an hour at a time and just wants to crawl. Mass always seems to be during nap time now too and she will no longer nap in church. Last time I had to go to the back of the church and let her move around on the floor. I will go again this weekend for Easter and I will be bringing toys and puffs with me.

We keep him in mass as long as possible. Puffs, books, back and forth holding, ppl watching..etc. We sit toward the back pews or seating and take him out to the kids' table/reading area for some running around if he gets fussy. (He's almost 17 months)

@Dandelion: we usually do one at a time but maybe we need to revamp the church toy stash with some more enticing toys!

@HLK208: I like the necklace idea. I have a short with a sparkly neckline that I usually wear to church and he loves that...for a few minutes!

I sure do miss the days when he slept through mass in my arms... And only weighed 8lbs! I hold him most of mass and he's gotta be pushing 23-24lbs!

I usually try to sit with her for awhile, give her a drawing pad, crayons, sing the songs a little louder so she can feel like she can sing to...when that fails I hold her in the back of church. I take her back and we keep trying. It's exhausting but just lately at 22 months, she's gotten a lot better. She wants to follow along with sitting, kneeling, standing but I still have to keep her distracted most of the time. Wearing a sparkly necklace or an intricate top helps for when I hold her. So silly but I know how stressful it can be to try to keep a toddler quiet and happy.

We found a good contemporary service that's not in the regular sanctuary so it echoes less which helps.

I agree as a WOHM I just can't drop her off in the nursery again after she's in daycare all week. I think it will be different when she actaully has Sunday school.

Today at age 2.5 she was much better (no snacks just colored).

We keep our boys with us for the music at the beginning, take them to the nursery during the sermon, and then get them again for the end, which at our church is a couple more songs & communion. Even that is exhausting, but I like to have them with us during church as much as possible. We try to keep them entertained & quiet, but mostly we just rely on people's forgiveness! If they start really being disruptive, we take them to the back or outside.

I have only been to church once since LO was born. The service times are just not great with her naps. It's a very large church, so I'm still not comfortable with leaving her at the nursery. I'm hoping that when she drops down to one nap, we'll be able to go more regularly.

We use the nursery! He has a blast playing with new toys and has more people to love on him :) its a nice break for us and we can really focus on the service. A church without a nursery would be a deal breaker for us. As kids grow up they move into age appropriate small groups where they talk about topics that are relevant to their little lives. I think it is important for their religious "education" to be something that they understand. Until age two it is just playtime, but after that they do a short lesson (like 5 minutes) and a craft that is related.

We bring books, stickers, a bag of small toys, foam shapes in a small bag, colouring stuff and snacks. She's 16 months, and spends the first 10 minutes looking at people come in, snacks take 10 minutes, the inevitable diaper change takes 10 minutes...we have a 90 minute meeting and only rarely do we have to take her out because she's disruptive. We just keep distracting her.

@Grace: lol I've considered passing him off to the people behind us ;) we shush him too, he thinks we are playing, he GRINS and then bursts into a fit of giggles when we shush him. He's rotten! I swear, he knows he's adorable.

@Dandelion: yeah, that was my fear... We haven't used the bumbo in awhile so I wasn't sure if he'd still fit. He's a chunk! I think he might be too little for coloring books but we have some toys that he only gets during mass and that works for a few minutes. He's just heavy and wants to twist and turn and grab lol.

@Applesandbananas: Shoot! I'd let my LO stand up and grin at the people behind us! Especially if you are sitting in front of grandmother types. They'll just make goofy faces back at your LO and keep him entertained for a few minutes. I think you've got quite a few years before you need to worry about him sitting still and paying attention to the mass. ;) The only thing I do try to be consistent with, is saying "shhhh" when LO starts talking. It doesn't work, but I figure it's good to get in the habit.

We have a cry room but it's basically a closet with a couple of chairs and you go up a flight of stairs to get to it and there's no baby gate at the top. We've gone to the cry room a few times but it's more hassle than helpful.

I kind of wish our church had a Sunday school for LO but at the same time, he's in daycare all week so I'd probably feel guilty... Stupid mommy guilt :(

@Grace: they absolutely do! LO was really loud today, babbling and waving bye-bye to everyone as they walked up to communion and everyone told us he was so sweet and adorable and well-behaved, etc. but he's very wriggly and just a typical one year old. I leave mass exhausted from holding him and trying to keep him from being disruptive.

Has anyone tried taking a bumbo or something for their LO to sit in the pew? He sits up well unassisted but if we sit him down in the pew, he just pulls himself up and grins at the people behind us.

Our congregation is wonderful and they adore him, I'm very grateful we've never gotten any evil eyes or nasty remarks but I just wish it were a little easier to get through mass with LO!

I take my LO to mass every week and it's highly encouraged even if they are being disruptive. Mine has started "talking" loudly during the homily and people still come up to us and say "oh what a good baby". I think a lot of people turn a blind eye to young kids. We bring toys and give them to her one at a time. I sing all the hymns/reponses straight to her and she listens very intently. I've seen people let their LO crawl up and down the pew. Worse case scenario, we take her to the back of the church, or to the crying room (although lots of churches don't have those anymore).

LO used to do pretty well at church but now that he's much more mobile (almost walking!) he can't stand having to sit still through mass and obviously expecting a one year old to sit through an hour long mass is unfair.

If you take your LO to church, how?? Lol I'm running out of ideas. Puffs keep him quiet for a few minutes, we give him a few special (quiet) church toys that keep him entertained for a few minutes, but other than that, he wants to be held, he wants to be put down so he can cruise/crawl, he wants to pull the hair of the people in the pew in front of us, etc.

It's Holy Week so lots of mass time coming up, help!!
