@Corduroy: Because you know your baby better than anyone else! I did the same thing with my LO's reflux . . . I sought out my own Ped GI specialist, and, as it turns out, LO needed surgery! My Pedi thought it was just normal stuff she would grow out of.

@Corduroy: I don't think there is anything wrong with questioning or researching things you think would be beneficial. It really isn't possible for any one person, regardless of credentials, to know everything so the benefits of probiotics (even when not on antibiotics like another bee mentioned) may not be in the bag of knowledge/experience your specific pedi has.... plus probiotics & it's benefits are more of a natural living tidbit than common practice thing.

Ours completely missed P being SGA & like alot of pedi's didn't know much about protein intolerances or breastfeeding... that doesn't diminish his knowledge or capabilities in treating other aspects of our lo health.

I'd look into the benefits & then take some of that info to my pedi, revisiting why they don't recommend them.

I would at least ask her why she thinks probiotics aren't a good idea. Just say you had someone mention it and you were wandering why not?

So if I think probiotics are the right thing do I ask the pediatrician her thoughts again? I hesitate to go against her recommendation because:

1) she's the doctor and
2) I recently fed LO egg yolk even though she said "she wouldn't recommend it" as a first food (I waited a month) and LO had a reaction. So I feel like I should have learned my lesson from that one.

What is this urge in me that thinks I know better than the doctor I selected??

@Corduroy: My son had antibiotics when he was 2 weeks old and his pediatrician recommended Culturelle for kids. It's a powder that I mixed with some breastmilk and syringed it into his mouth. the Culturelle for Kids was available at CVS, and I was exhausted or I would have explored other options at Wegmans (across town).

I know others like @coacheswife123 who gave their LOs probiotics even when they weren't on antibiotics. I believe she gave her son Gaia drops?

We had to put LO on antibiotics at 6 weeks for an ear infection :( I made the VERY BIG mistake of following it up with probiotics after her course was done and it blew her out of the water - she was up SCREAMING all night. I think trying to re-populate her gut so soon after it was wiped clean was too much for her. We've been to scared to try them again since.

ETA: We may have also given her too much - 5 drops per the instructions on the box (Biogaia). She was too tiny and probably only needed 1.

My son is older, but I have used the Culturelle brand with mixed success. I swear I can taste it in water!

@Corduroy: we started giving LO these at six months when she got her first ear infection (at the advice of our doc)

@Corduroy: Aww poor lo! I wonder why the pedi said no probiotics too.... P got a horrid yeast rash from the antibiotics she had a birth & while I know her gut flora was practically non existent then making her more apt, I couldn't imagine any of us having antibiotics now & now having some kind of probiotics. :/

ETA: I was able to give P a probiotic in liquid form that I found at my grocery store (just a couple ml in a syringe through the day) and they also make probiotics specifically for babies/toddlers. Where I ran into problems was finding one not cultured on dairy or soy & P was intolerant to both. :(

@brownie: she said there while older kids could eat yogurt there is no good probiotic source for LO's age, 7 months. I'm open to hear what others had heard though.

I just gave LO her first dose of antibiotics and I am anxious/sad about it. I feel like I'm ruining her "gut health."

She's had a fever for three days and when I took her to the doctor today she said she has "a small pneumonia" and ear infection. Sounds like a legitimate reason for antibiotics. So what's my deal??

I was hoping to temper my fears with probiotics but LO's doctor recommended not giving her any.

Logically I know kids get antibiotics all the time and that LO will be fine. The antibiotics will help her get better. Help this first time mom snap out of it, please.
