I did the same thing with my LO's reflux . . . I sought out my own Ped GI specialist, and, as it turns out, LO needed surgery! It really isn't possible for any one person, regardless of credentials, to know <i>everything</i> so the benefits of probiotics (even when not on antibiotics like another bee mentioned) may not be in the bag of knowledge/experience your specific pedi has.... plus probiotics &amp; it's benefits are more of a natural living tidbit than common practice thing.</p> <p>Ours completely missed P being SGA &amp; like alot of pedi's didn't know much about protein intolerances or breastfeeding... that doesn't diminish his knowledge or capabilities in treating other aspects of our lo health. </p> <p>I'd look into the benefits &amp; then take some of that info to my pedi, revisiting why they don't recommend them. </p> https://boards.hellobee.com/topic/los-first-antibiotics#post-1113256 Thu, 26 Sep 2013 11:33:26 +0000 artsyfartsy 1113256@https://boards.hellobee.com/ <p>I would at least ask her why she thinks probiotics aren't a good idea. I hesitate to go against her recommendation because:</p> <p>1) she's the doctor and<br /> 2) I recently fed LO egg yolk even though she said "she wouldn't recommend it" as a first food (I waited a month) and LO had a reaction. It's a powder that I mixed with some breastmilk and syringed it into his mouth. the Culturelle for Kids was available at CVS, and I was exhausted or I would have explored other options at Wegmans (across town).</p> <p>I know others like @coacheswife123 who gave their LOs probiotics even when they weren't on antibiotics. I think trying to re-populate her gut so soon after it was wiped clean was too much for her. We've been to scared to try them again since.</p> <p>ETA: We may have also given her too much - 5 drops per the instructions on the box (Biogaia). I wonder why the pedi said no probiotics too.... P got a horrid yeast rash from the antibiotics she had a birth &amp; while I know her gut flora was practically non existent then making her more apt, I couldn't imagine any of us having antibiotics now &amp; now having some kind of probiotics. :/</p> <p>ETA: I was able to give P a probiotic in liquid form that I found at my grocery store (just a couple ml in a syringe through the day) and they also make probiotics specifically for babies/toddlers. I feel like I'm ruining her "gut health."</p> <p>She's had a fever for three days and when I took her to the doctor today she said she has "a small pneumonia" and ear infection. Sounds like a legitimate reason for antibiotics. So what's my deal?? </p> <p>I was hoping to temper my fears with probiotics but LO's doctor recommended not giving her any. </p> <p>Logically I know kids get antibiotics all the time and that LO will be fine. The antibiotics will help her get better. Help this first time mom snap out of it, please. </p>
