@Jennibenni: poor kiddo!

I don't know if this is the case for a lot of people, but when my immune system is inflamed from one thing (dust), other allergens seem to evoke a stronger response (cats, pollen, etc). Keep trying different antihistamines. Zyrtec and Xyzal are the only ones that really work for me, but they do make me a bit sleepy. I try to take them with a meal in the middle of the day to help me stay awake.
I have been getting shots for the last 6 years, but even with them, I have to keep the dust at bay, stay inside during tree and grass season and avoid cats.
For me, the thing that works the best is rinsing my nose with a NeilMed squirt bottle. IDK what you can do for a little kid, but showers before bed also help a lot.
Good luck. It's a frustratingly long process even when you can see a doctor immediately!

ETA: don't forget about the stuffed animals and soft toys. I'm able to wash most in the washer and put them in the dryer. I put the more delicate ones in a lingerie bag.

@DesertDreams88: Thank you, I’ll look for your post!

@Silva: We’ve not done allergy testing. So far just daily allergy medication.

@BUNBUN: Great tips! We change air filters monthly already and do not have carpet luckily. We vacuum area rugs and floors daily but I’ll have to do the couches and blinds. Pollen here is awful right now so that is definitely contributing.

This week he got a couple of ant bites and had a major reaction with swelling and hives so apparently he’s allergic to ant bites. Something else to worry and watch out for.

If you’re still noticing severe symptoms even when you stay inside, I would recommend keeping your windows closed at all times, changing your air filters if you have them (we change out AC filters monthly during allergy season, way more often than the package recommends) and doing a deep clean of all blinds, carpets, bedding, stuffed animals, couches, drapes, ceiling fans, etc.

have you done allergy testing? my friend's daughter was having similar allergy stuff and they finally did some allergy testing and discovered she was mildly allergic to their dog.

Following... We're also having issues with this. My 2 year old has a ton of seasonal allergies (as well as allergies to over a dozen foods, poor guy). The nasal drip and puffy eyes are constant. We were supposed to follow up with the allergist next week but now obviously it will need to wait. I'm mainly focusing on bathing him whenever we come in from outside and keeping his room as clean as possible. I suspect that allergy shots would ultimately be needed to make much of a difference...

I don't know anything about kid allergies but my husband did allergy shots on and off ages 26-31 and they helped immensely, so just adding to what @bhbee: said above.

Also, I know I posted about allergies once about 1.5 years ago (??) and got lots of good tips, if you search for it you might find it.

Would you consider more holistic treatment? Allergies indicate autoimmunity which for me means you should try to get to the core issue and not just treat symptoms. I can tell you that as an adult my seasonal allergies went away after doing a gut healing protocol, and generally children can heal much, much quicker than adults. So practically speaking I would focus on diet changes. Now is actually a good time being home and all. About the allergy shiners- we have had this issue for years with one of my kids that has food allergies. I recently found out that liver helps and they are finally going away after we had tried so many things. Anyway I know this sounds a bit unconventional but it’s so much easier to take care of these things when they are little and I wish someone had brought it up when my kids were younger so that’s where I’m coming from.

@JennyPenny: I will try switching in the meantime and see if that makes any difference,, thanks!

@bhbee: Thank you for writing all of this! It’s really insightful. We are in FL and similarly something is always in season it seems.

It’s interesting you commented about speech because I’ve not really made the connection before but he talks super loudly and his enunciation is not great at all and I bet it’s because his head is stuffy and he’s not hearing clearly all the time. It allll makes sense.

So glad it has all worked with you daughter! The ages you mentioned make me feel better about not being able to charge forward with this right now since he is definitely not old enough for the shots.

one more thing - if they’ve been outside at all, always wash them off before bed (showers are best I think since stuff circulates in the bath). It can make a huge difference not to sleep with pollen in your hair etc!

I’m so sorry. Allergies were ruining my daughter’s life starting around that age, at least during tree season which is her worst allergy. We live in tx where it’s almost always allergy season for something ... I’d definitely start watching pollen counts in your area and you may get an idea of the triggers that are worst for you. We have several easter photos where it looks like she had black puffy eyes!

For sure, look at a steroid nasal spray in addition to the antihistamine. Our allergist recommends Flonase sensimist if they are fussy about spray. Also agree that changing antihistamines is worth a try. For the eyes the allergist gave us two potential things for it. One was otc antihistamine eye drops - more for the redness/itchy side. For puffiness he gave us desonide (or something close to that) which is an Rx gel. I’m trying to think if I missed anything ...

Definitely, when you can plan to see an allergist and possibly ent. Your son sounds like a good candidate for shots or other immunotherapy in terms of severity. Allergists seem to approach it differently but I’d ask now to get the picture. I don’t have experience on tonsils/adenoids but worth asking due to the mouth breathing.

For my daughter, shots were absolutely life changing. They wouldn’t start shots until the kid is old enough to be trusted to verbally express if they felt a reaction, since that can be dangerous even if uncommon. For her we agreed on 4.5. You have to do allergy testing first (skin testing for us) so they know what to give you. We had a bit of a rough start - I chased her around the shot room a few times! And I’ve seen older kids screaming and fighting about it. But I don’t think there’s anything else that could have improved her life so much. We started in summer and the next spring was SO much better. For kids 3-5 years is usually recommended (we had to do a buildup going more, but once you get to the maintenance dose it’s every 4 weeks for us). My daughter is 8.5 now and quitting after May and she’s excited for that.

Sorry for the novel, let me know if you have questions. It’s hard when they are so little. We even found, especially looking back, that it affected her behavior and even her progress with speech. And it would magically improve around the end of the spring. So if you’re seeing any of that, just know that it’s normal because they’re exhausted. Hugs

Maybe adding Flonase and looking at removing tonsils/adenoids for breathing space?

I don’t have any personal experience but I do remember my coworker telling me that her kids have to switch between allergy meds (Zyrtec and Allegra I believe) each year. She said over time the body gets used to one so they have to switch to the other, and back and forth.

My almost 2.5 year old is struggling with allergies. He has been on daily OTC medication for over a year. The past couple months it seems to be helping less, and he’s had near constant nasal drip for months now, along with puffy eyes in the morning (used to be occasional, is now every day.)

I’ve also started to notice what I’ve hear referred to as “allergy shiners,” like darkness/bruising under the eyes as well as a lot of mouth breathing.

Obviously I’m not planning to take him in for this in the near future with the current climate and us staying home, but I’d like to have an idea of what I should expect or look for as a general course of action down the road. Any experience?
